Patent number: 7470112Abstract: A split runner for a Francis turbine has runner segments that are adapted to be joined together along confronting surface portions thereof to form a composite runner having a crown, a band and a plurality of blades extending between the crown and the band. The confronting surface portions of the runner segments are located only along portions of the crown and portions of the band, and the confronting surface portions of the runner segments are located in between and spaced from adjacent blades of the composite runner. Since the confronting surface portions are located only along portions of the crown and portions of the band, none of the blades are split eliminating the need to weld together blades during formation of the composite runner. Accordingly, the composite runner does not have weld joints formed in the blades which are highly stressed operating parts of the runner.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2006Date of Patent: December 30, 2008Assignee: General Electric CanadaInventors: Paul Huber, Andre Coutu, Eric Theroux, Julien Morin, Mario Hamel

Patent number: 7044452Abstract: A deflector for use in a hydraulic turbine is adapted to be mounted relative to a vertically extending wall of the draft tube. The deflector has an upstream plate and a downstream plate. The upstream plate is positioned to extend downwardly and outwardly from the wall of the draft tube and the downstream plate is positioned to extend downwardly and inwardly from the upstream plate. The downstream plate has at least one elongated air communication port extending therethrough and adjacent the upstream plate. An air supply inlet portion extends from the wall of the draft tube into the deflector above the elongated air communication port permitting an oxygen containing gas to flow from the air supply inlet portion downwardly through the deflector, out the elongated air communication port and into the water flowing past the downstream plate so as to enhance the dissolved oxygen content of the water.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2004Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: General Electric CanadaInventors: Eric Demers, Normand Desy

Patent number: 6987344Abstract: A rotary transformer has a bus duct assembly that extends through the hollow shaft of a rotary transformer from collector or slip rings positioned above a drive motor for the rotary transformer to end windings of the rotor positioned most remote from the drive motor. By positioning the leads of the bus duct connection with the rotor end windings on the rotor end windings most remote form the drive motor, the shaft strength and integrity is not reduced due to the torque applied by the drive motor. Further, the shaft is formed from two coupled shaft sections and the bus duct assembly comprises two L shaped sections each positioned substantially within a corresponding shaft section. The bus duct sections are interconnected to complete the bus duct assembly making it simpler to remove the first or upper shaft section from the second or lower shaft section during field servicing.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2003Date of Patent: January 17, 2006Assignee: General Electric Canada Inc.Inventors: Michael Walter White, Bruce William Mills, Robert Henry Rehder

The gas distribution manifold extends at least substantially around the first inside wall of the draft tube. The gas distribution manifold has a plurality of gas outlet ports for discharging oxygen into the water as the oxygen containing gas passes there around. An oxygen containing gas supply extends along a person access passageway and through the wall of the draft tube into the gas distribution manifold adjacent a man hole door.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2003Date of Patent: December 6, 2005Assignee: General Electric Canada Inc.Inventors: Normand Desy, Roger Grenier

Patent number: 6969925Abstract: A ship lock utilizes a hydraulic turbine and/or pump-turbine to regulate the discharge flow rates through the ship lock to an approximate constant value during the majority of the water transfer cycle resulting in a diminishing of total energy of head losses and to enable the recuperation of the unused hydraulic energy for generation as electricity. The difference in water levels on opposite sides of the ship lock constitutes potential hydraulic energy. By regulating the discharge, the total head losses over a given period of time diminish very significantly, thus giving an opportunity for optimization of hydraulic energy recuperation.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2003Date of Patent: November 29, 2005Assignee: General Electric Canada Inc.Inventors: Norman Desy, Pekka Virta
