Abstract: A method and computing device that provides viewer impression data for a recorded digital video stream. The method receives a digital video stream as a series of segments, and stores it as a recorded digital video stream having a transition between two consecutive segments at a transition position. The method stores a notification tag that is associated with the transition, and that includes a tag position in the recorded digital video stream, a notification mode, and tag data. During playback of the recorded digital video stream, the method generates a play mode status event, and generates a transition notification when the playback encounters the notification tag and, based on the notification mode, the transition associated with the notification tag. The method collects viewer impression data for one of the two consecutive segments from the play mode status event and the transition notification.

Abstract: A content delivery system headend is provided which includes a Switched Digital Video (SDV) manager for coordinating SDV sessions requested by subscribers over an access network. The headend also includes an input for receiving content to be broadcast during the SDV sessions and a subscriber control unit. The subscriber control unit is configured to compare channel change requests received by the SDV manager from subscribers to a current subscription plan that specifies a pre-established set of channels to which the subscriber has previously subscribed. In this way tuning information for accessing channels specified in the channel change requests is only supplied if the channel change requests request channels included in the current subscription plan.
Abstract: Receivers and methods for receiving a signal may result in improved performance by resolving specific impairments at particular levels. For example, bit error ratio (BER) in the downstream signal of an HFC network may be improved by resolving up to 6% AM hum. Thus, the receivers and methods described herein may function with dramatically improved error rates and continuous FEC lock, in relation to conventional receivers, in the presence of SCTE 40 impairments and full channel loading over the receivers entire input dynamic range.
Abstract: One or more overlay wavelengths are applied to a GPON architecture to provide sufficient, cost-effective forward bandwidth per home for targeted, unique narrowcast services to allow traditional HFC operators to use a PON architecture with their existing HFC equipment. A separate return path capability using a separate coaxial cable with RF signals to the GPON may also be used. This return capability may be provided either by a fiber optic link or coaxial link from the home.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for encoding a video signal stream. The method includes receiving a video signal stream, identifying a plurality of individual segments within the video signal stream and encoding, off-line, recurring ones of the individual segments that recur with at least a first frequency to produce encoded recurring segments. The video signal stream is also encoded in real-time to generate a real-time encoded video stream. Segments in the real-time encoded video stream are replaced with their corresponding encoded recurring segments to thereby produce an encoded video output stream that includes some segments encoded in real-time and other segments encoded off-line.

Abstract: A system includes an optical transmitter portion, an optical fiber, an optical receiver portion, a laser portion and a combiner portion. Optical signals may be launched by the optical transmitter portion at very low power levels to avoid Raman-induced interactions between the co-propagating signals along the optical fiber. The laser portion and the combiner portion may apply a back-pumped laser signal to the optical fiber. The back-pumped laser signal provides a Raman gain that amplifies the co-propagating signals to a minimum power level such that the optical receiver portion can detect the co-propagating signals within a predetermined acceptable carrier-to-noise ratio.
Abstract: A system for token-based management of a PKI (public key infrastructure) personalization process includes a token request and management system (TRMS) configured to gather request information from a requestor; and a token personalization system (TPS) configured to personalize a hardware token such that usage of the hardware token is constrained by the request information. A method for token-based management of a PKI personalization process includes: requesting a hardware token; personalizing a hardware token such that the hardware token is confined to operation within limiting parameters; binding the hardware token to a workstation which is configured receive the hardware token and use credentials within the hardware token to request and download PKI data from a PKI server, the workstation being further configured to personalize an end user product by loading the PKI data into internal memory contained within the end user product; and monitoring usage of the hardware token and the PKI data.

Abstract: A method of responding to an incoming call includes receiving the incoming call from a caller. The incoming call includes caller ID information having image data associated with the caller included therein. The image data is displayed on a video telephony device display while audibly announcing receipt of the incoming call. A communication session is established with the caller by presenting a pre-recorded announcement to the caller. In response to the pre-recorded announcement, a message from the caller is received and recorded. The message is rendered while it is being recorded only if a user-selectable mute setting option has not been activated.
Abstract: A process receives a personalization request to personalize a communication device. Further, the process provides the personalization request to a message controller that composes a message having personalization information with a message composer engine according to a set of rules and configures one or more communication parameters for the message with a message flow control engine according to the set of rules. The set of rules indicates a distributed environment set of files that the message composer engine and the message flow control engine utilize in a distributed environment, and a centralized environment set of files that the message composer engine and the message flow control engine utilize in a centralized environment.
Abstract: A call processing module includes a first network interface configured to communicate over a packet-switched network and a second network interface configured to communicate with a local subscriber over a broadband access network employing RF modulation. A call manager is provided which includes a database associating a local subscriber telephone number with an address of a client device associated with the local subscriber for a plurality of subscribers authorized to receive telephony service. A frequency handler is provided for allocating to the client device a receive frequency and a transmit frequency to be used by the client device over the broadband access network during a telephony call.

One embodiment of a method for performing motion estimation includes setting a target complexity for a macroblock of a source frame and performing motion estimation for one or more partitions of the macroblock until the target complexity is met.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing and distributing bundled code objects to, for example, set-top boxes serviced by a multi-service operator. The system and method creates different profiles, each including code objects, download conditions and so on. The different profiles are then combined in a code download bundle and the code download bundle is downloaded to a service center, which further distributes the bundle to a plurality of site servers which distribute the information in the bundle to the appropriate destinations, such as set-top boxes used with cable television service.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receives a prediction unit (PU) for a coding unit (CU) of video content. The PU is partitionable into a plurality of PU partition types. The method determines a PU partition type for the PU and a residual tree structure based on the PU partition type for partitioning of the CU into transform units (TUs). The residual tree includes a binary partition of a node into two. A TU partition for the PU partition type is determined based on the residual tree structure and a desired level of partitioning in the residual tree structure. The method then uses the TU partition in a transform operation.
Abstract: A method and computing device for switching from a first transport stream to a second transport stream. The method detects a trigger in the first transport stream that determines a switch point for tuning to the second transport stream. The method receives a last frame of audio/video content in the first transport stream that immediately precedes the switch point, and initiates a switch to the second transport stream after receiving the last frame. The method processes the last frame through an audio/video decoder simultaneous with the initiating of the switch, and disables the output of the audio/video decoder after the processing of the last frame. The method receives a first frame of audio/video content in the second transport stream, and enables the output of the audio/video decoder after processing the first frame through the audio/video decoder.
Abstract: The present invention is an upstream power control system, within a cable modem which controls the power consumption of the cable modem. The power control system comprises a MAC chip which synchronizes upstream communication signals for transmission to a cable network and outputs an upstream control signal, an upstream amplifier which receives the synchronized upstream communication signals, and a complex programmable logic device (CPLD). The CPLD controls the upstream amplifier in response to the upstream control signal such that the upstream amplifier is powered on during transmission of the communication signals, and powered off when not transmitting, which results in the reduction of power consumed by the cable modem.
