Abstract: A safety ski binding having a pivotal binding plate releasably held in a skiing position, includes separate holder elements on opposite sides of the plate. The holder elements prevent lateral movement of the boot relative to the plate until the plate has been pivoted beyond a predetermined angle. On exceeding the angle, the holder elements may pivot freely to allow lateral release of the boot.

Abstract: A heel- or sole holder arranged at a sole or release plate of a ski binding, comprising a heel holddown guided in a guide means to be movable essentially parallel to the plane of the plate. The heel holddown can be rearwardly displaced out of an operating position which it has assumed under the action of spring force, against such spring force. The heel holddown possesses at one end a deflection or diverting surface which, in the operating position of the heel holddown, overlaps or extends over the ski boot-support surface of the sole or release plate and extends in the direction of the spring force towards the sole or release plate. The guide means is structured to slope or descend towards the sole or release plate in the direction of the spring force.

Abstract: An improved arrangement for holding the rear end of a sole plate on which is mounted a ski boot to the upper surface of a ski. A lock is provided for securing the rear end of the sole plate to the ski, which lock is nonmovable in the position of use of the sole plate and during occurrences of a safety release of the sole plate from engagement with the ski but, on the other hand, is manually movable against the force of a spring.

Abstract: In a type of safety ski binding having if desired a plate fixed to the boot and releasably fixed to a ski, there is provided structure for lightening the boot construction, particularly the sole thereof, including the provision of structure for gripping the heel of the boot for holding same against such plate. Such structures extend around the heel a distance at least equal to one-third of the radius of the boot sole measured from and extending rearwardly from points on the sides of the ski boot where a plane perpendicular to the longitudinally central plane of the ski boot and containing the center point of the radius intersects the side walls of the ski boot. Reinforcement of the heel of the ski boot may be provided by utilizing a trough-shaped insert around the bottom of the boot which may, if desired, be interrupted at the ball of the foot for facilitating walking. Thin tension straps extend under the sole of the boot for reinforcing same and preventing slippage.

Abstract: A safety ski binding having a base and a sole holder pivotally connected to the base and movable about a pivot axis between a position of use and a release position. An adjustable abutment and a holding member are provided on the base. A slide member is reciprocally slidably movably mounted on the base and has an inclined surface thereon. The slide member is movable toward and away from the holding element. A single spring is provided and engages and extends between the slide member and the adjustable abutment for urging the slide member toward the holding member on the base. A locking pin is secured to the sole holder and is positioned to engage the holding element and the inclined surface at a location spaced from a threshold part when the sole holder is in the position of use.

Abstract: Safety ski binding including an intermediate plate and improved boot gripping means. A plate intermediate the boot and ski is mounted onto the ski by centrally positioned pivot means and held normally aligned with the ski by heel means which permits only limited swiveling movement of the plate with respect to the ski and only limited movement vertically of the plate away from the ski. Conventional toe engaging means are provided between the plate and the ski boot and said heel means also engage the heel of the ski boot, said means being arranged for releasing the ski boot from the plate upon movement of the plate a predetermined distance either vertically away from the ski or pivotally laterally of the ski. The ski boot is thus freed from said plate and said plate remains with the ski. After the ski boot is so freed from the ski the plate returns to its aligned position with respect to the ski and the apparatus is ready for re-engagement of the boot therewith.

Abstract: Manual release means for safety ski binding. The sole holder for the forward or rearward end of a ski boot is pivoted to a housing and includes a pin within said housing which moves upwardly and downwardly with opening and closing movement of the sole holder. A pair of tonglike means resiliently embrace said pin for normally holding the sole holder in sole engaging position but are spread apart against an adjustable spring force upon imposition of a predetermined opening force onto the sole engaging means of the device. One side of said tonglike device is directly engaged by one end of the adjusting spring and the other side of said tonglike device is engaged by the reaction means holding the other end of said spring whereby to double the holding strength of the tonglike means for a given spring as compared to a construction in which the spring holds only one side of a pin retaining device.

Abstract: A device for mounting a binding component onto a ski and providing for longitudinal adjustment thereof on and with respect to the ski. A carriage for carrying the binding component is arranged for slidable adjustment along a ski. Either the carriage or a device fixed to the ski carry a toothed rail and the other thereof carries a toothed locator positioned for crosswise motion relative to the ski into and out of engagement with the toothed rail. A light spring holds the locator in normal engagement with the toothed rail. A manual device is provided for disengagement of the parts upon moving of the locator crosswise of the ski against the spring. This enables the spring to be relatively light inasmuch as it functions only to hold the locator in rail engaging position and the locator may be easily disengaged by simply direct movement thereof against the spring.

Abstract: A release-ski binding with a release plate releasably connected with the ski boot, the release plate being releasably anchored at its both ends on the ski, characterized by a lever arrangement acting on the release plate, which on the one hand is set to be coupled with the leg of the skier above the ankle, and on the other hand stands in operative connection with a spring which tends to hold the rear end of the release plate in engagement with a holding member overlapping this end.

Abstract: A ski binding with release plate which extends substantially over the entire length of the sole, mounted rotatably and liftably in the range of an extension of the axis of the leg of the skier by a pivot pin screwed on the ski, and latched or releasably locked to the side and/or upwardly at both ends by means of release mechanisms, respectively. The release plate is provided in the vicinity of the ball of the foot with a hinge which is operative only upwardly, thus away from the ski, while downwardly, toward the ski, a rigid abutment is provided.

Abstract: Run-away preventing device for skis. A pair of prongs are pivotally mounted at each side of a ski for alternately occupying an inactive position alongside of and parallel with the ski or an active position projecting downwardly from the ski. A generally U-shaped member is connected to said prongs and lies against the upper surface of the ski and under the ski boot when the latter is in position on the ski. Said U-shaped member is so arranged as to be subjected to tension when pressed down against the ski by the ski boot with such tension being relieved when same is permitted by removal of the ski boot to spring up away from the ski and move said prongs into the above-mentioned active position. Said generally U-shaped member and the prongs connected thereto comprise only a single movable part and hence combine a minimum of parts with a maximum of reliability.

Abstract: A guide plate assembly for use on skis in association with releasing ski bindings. The guide plate is composed of a mounting plate which is secured to the upper surface of a ski and has a low-friction material guide plate secured thereto and defining a support for the sole of a ski boot.

Abstract: Sole holder component for a ski binding. A vertically movable sole holder is provided with a row of vertically arranged ratchet teeth and is spring biased into its upward position. At least one sidewardly movable slide is engageable with said ratchet teeth for holding same against upward movement and said slide is spring biased into such engaged position. Means manually operable are provided for manual withdrawal of said slide and consequent release of said sole holder when desired.

Abstract: An improvement in a front jaw for a safety ski binding. A base plate and a base member are fixed together and have two axes thereon which are arranged perpendicularly to the base plate. Each axis pivotally supports a two-arm lever so that the longer lever arm engages the ski boot and the shorter lever arm engages a locking element which in turn engages a locking member movable against the force of a spring. The specific improvement is the utilization of a single locking member which is spring loaded and urged into engagement with a locking element. The locking element has a curved sector with differently inclined portions thereon so that as the curved sector moves relative to the locking element upon a swinging motion of the lever arms, the locking member will be moved against the spring resistance to a certain threshold point after which the lever arms will be permitted to move freely outwardly to facilitate a releasing function.

Abstract: A ski binding having a heel hold-down member which releases the boot whenever an overload is applied thereto. An opening lever is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis secured to a pair of parallel upstanding bearing supporting members mounted to the upper surface of a ski. One arm of the operating lever extends rearwardly of the heel hold-down member and is longer than the other arm which extends generally toward the heel hold-down member. The long arm is connected to a strap and the short arm is operatively connected to a spring-loaded operating member for controlling the movement of the heel hold-down member during the releasing operation.

Abstract: A tension adjustment device for a safety ski binding. A device is provided by which the tension on a safety ski binding may be selected and determined without the necessity of a ski boot being present in the binding. There is provided a two-part carriage movable longitudinally of the ski and capable of being fixed at a selected point on the ski. The two parts of said carriage are movable together in one direction due to a manually applied force and are movable relative to each other in the opposite direction against a spring force by a manually operable adjustment device such as an eccentric or through the application of a force to the ski binding carrying part. One of the parts is mounted onto a ski supported base plate and the other of said parts carries the ski binding. With the ski binding free of engagement with the ski boot the adjustment device is operated to select the desired tension for the binding.

Abstract: A combination safety ski binding and ski shoe, with a release plate fastened on the ski at its both ends until the exceeding of a predetermined force action, the release plate being releasably connected with the shoe by a sole holder and a heel holder. The sole holder as well as the front anchorage of the release plate are rearwardly offset with respect to the tip of the shoe, wherein the sole holder has coupling mounts positively engaging in each other, and the shoe sole between the mount arranged thereon and the heel holder is formed considerably stiff.

Abstract: A safety ski binding having a sole plate releasably secured to a ski between a pair of holding parts. The sole plate includes a toe gripping device for gripping over the toe of a ski boot and, in addition, a heel holding device adjustable in the longitudinal direction for holding the heel of the ski boot to the sole plate. The heel holding device is connected to a carriage member which is composed of two parts, both movable relative to the other. One of the parts is fixable by a locking device in several positions on the sole plate to fix the carriage member relative to the sole plate.

Abstract: For the heel holder of a safety ski binding having a separable sole plate, there is provided a row of teeth laterally across the sole plate and anchoring means for anchoring a cable extending from said means to the component engaging the heel of the ski boot. Said anchoring means comprises a pair of longitudinally spaced cross members which are connected together and which provide a fulcrum intermediate the ends thereof for engaging said sole plate. Said cable is anchored to said anchoring means on one side of said fulcrum and tooth means are provided on the other side thereof for engaging the teeth on the sole plate. The force of the cable when in operating position with respect to a ski boot holds the tooth firmly in engaging position but with the ski boot removed the anchoring means may be tilted and quickly and easily adjusted to any different desired position.

Abstract: Ski boot having part of the binding in a suitable recess in the sole of the boot. The part of the binding in the recess cooperates as desired with the other binding part which latter is fixed to the ski. In this invention the recess is transverse of the boot and open at both ends. The boot sole may be longitudinally curved on the bottom thereof to facilitate walking. Ribs may be provided within the recess to urge snow and ice outwardly through its open ends as such snow and ice is packed thereinto.
