    Abstract: The method of changing the cage, including a bottom (31), grill (32) and lid (38), of a laboratory animal, includes the steps of: (a) providing a first rack (20) holding at least one clean bottom, grill and lid; (b) removing a clean bottom, grill and lid from said first rack; (c) assembling a clean cage from such bottom, grill and lid; (d) transferring a laboratory animal from a dirty cage to such assembled clean cage; (e) disassembling the dirty cage into its bottom, grill and lid components; (f) providing a second rack (20) having space for holding the dirty cage bottom, grill and lid components; (g) placing said dirty grill and lid on the second rack; (h) washing the dirty grill and lid while mounted on said second rack; (i) removing soiled bedding from the dirty bottom; (j) washing the bottom; (k) placing cleaned bedding in the washed bottom; and (l) placing said washed bottom with cleaned bedding on said second rack; thereby to change the cage of said laboratory animal.

    Abstract: An illumination system for illuminating an area within a room includes one or more light sources, preferably disposed outside the room, one or more lighting heads disposed within the room, one or more light pipes and/or fiber bundles to transmit light from the source(s) to the lighting head(s). The system includes means for controlling both the intensity and the color rendering index of the light emitted from the lighting head. In a preferred embodiment, the sources include an incandescent source extending across the visible spectrum and a light emitting diode source which emits essentially red light, and control of the color rendering index is effected by controlling the relative amounts of light from the two sources reaching the lighting head. Preferred forms of the invention also include special joints which permit all necessary translations and rotations of the lighting head while still permitting a continuous light path via fiber bundles and/or light pipes from the source to the lighting head.

    Abstract: A heat stable culture medium is prepared by substituting glycerol for carbohydrate components such as dextrose that are prone to Maillard reactions. A preferred medium contains pancreatic digest of casein, soytone, soluble starch, a phosphate buffer system, a salt, a pH indicator, and glycerol as a primary carbon source. The culture medium is pH and color stable when exposed to steam sterilization, including post-manufacture steam sterilization when used as the medium of a self-contained biological indicator. A self-contained sterility indicator device contains a flexible cylindrical tube having an opening at one end. The tube contains a submicron screen as a gas transmissive, bacteria impermeable window, an adsorbent wick bearing at one end viable microorganisms, and a frangible glass ampule containing the culture medium. The end of the wick containing microorganisms is located away from the ampule and adjacent the screen.

    Abstract: The application describes a control pendant for controlling a multi-segment patient table to assume a variety of different positions or configurations. The pendant has safety features including automatic shutoff of power to the keys under selected conditions and backlighting of the keys when power is being supplied (e.g., when keys are operational) to provide improved visibility in low-light environments. The control pendant further has an ergonomically effective shape and key board layout. An icon representing the table and its segments is located on the keyboard, and the keyswitches are arranged with respect to the icon to facilitate rapid and accurate visual identification of keys which operate particular table segments.

    Abstract: Structure for evaluating the efficacy of sterilization apparatus using either steam or ethylene oxide as sterilant is disclosed. The structure includes an insert of porous material having a cavity formed therethrough for retaining a biological or chemical indicator. The porous material has homogeneous porosity throughout. The insert of porous material and indicator are enclosed within an outer covering which is relatively impervious to penetration of gases and which provides restricted pathways to air and sterilant. The outer covering is provided with removable portions which are removed when the structure is used to evaluate ethylene oxide sterilization. Removal of the portions enlarges the existing pathways for ingress and egress of gases which may be appropriate in certain efficacy testing.
