  • Publication number: 20150288738
Abstract: A broadband communication system with improved latency is disclosed. The system employs acceleration of secure web-based communications over a satellite communication network. In accordance with aspects of the invention, secure protocol acceleration is employed such that required protocol signals transmitted from a computer employing a web browser may be intercepted by a remote terminal. To insure that the browser will continue transmitting data, the remote terminal generates required acknowledgment and security signals to continue the secure communication, which may then transmitted back to the computer. Meanwhile, the received protocol signals may be converted by the remote terminal for transmission through the satellite communications system in a format appropriate for that communication medium. Aspects of the invention further include a hub or similar device for communicating with the satellite communications system.

  • Patent number: 9094266
Abstract: Satellite communication systems utilize spreading by repetition techniques, including block repetition, to enable operation at low signal to noise conditions. A carrier frequency offset between a transmitter and a receiver results in phase offsets between repetitions. Thus, combining the repetitions requires estimation of the phase offset between the repetitions before coherent de-spreading can be performed. Disclosed herein are methods for estimating a phase offset between successive block repetitions. The methods may utilize more than two repetitions for determining a common phase offset between any two successive repetitions. In some embodiments, these methods may allow summation of repetitions with better coherency and/or with a lower de-spreading loss.

  • Patent number: 9094090
Abstract: In a satellite communication system comprising at least a hub and a plurality of terminals, at least one terminal may include a cache for storing data objects. The cache may be based on a detachable memory device that may be inserted to or removed from the terminal at any given time, including after the terminal is deployed. Aspects are directed to preventing a prefetching of objects already stored in a cache of a remote terminal. In some embodiments, an efficient multicasting of content to terminals over an adaptive link may occur in a manner which may benefit terminals comprising a cache while not affecting or minimally affecting the performance of terminals that may not include a cache.

  • Patent number: 8958328
Abstract: A satellite communication system comprising a hub and plurality of terminals may be divided into multiple segments, wherein each segment may support part of the terminals. A method for decentralized balancing of traffic between the system segments is presented herein. One segment in each coverage beam may be designated as home carrier and include load balancing information. The terminals may be configured to tune on a home carrier, receive the load balancing information and then use it for selecting a least loaded segment on which they may remain operational until reset or powered off. In some embodiments of the invention, said load balancing information may be used for calculating relative probabilities for selecting segments through a weighted random selection algorithm.

  • Patent number: 8885503
Abstract: In a satellite communication system, comprising a hub and a plurality of heterogeneous terminals, the hub may split a bandwidth segment designated for a forward channel into at least two carriers, wherein some of the terminals may listen on a first carrier and some other terminals may listen on the at least second carrier. In this system, the hub may re-arrange the split of the bandwidth segment between the various carriers populating it in real-time or substantially in real-time, while the carriers are actively transmitted, and without causing loss of service and/or loss of data to terminals listening on those carriers. The terminals may be configured to track the carriers as they are re-arranged and to maintain seamless service to the end user throughout the re-arrangement process.

  • Patent number: 8804878
Abstract: Modern digital signals include framing. A known sequence of transmission symbols (Unique Word (UW)) included in the transmitted signal may be used by a receiver for framing synchronization. A receiver configured to receive such a signal may be configured to detect the UW even when the signal is received with some frequency uncertainty (e.g. offset or error). A method is presented for fast acquisition of symbol and/or frame timing of a signal, including in the presence of frequency uncertainty. In some embodiments, the presented method may be used for determining a frequency offset of the received signal and a location of a unique word (UW) within a frame of the received signal, wherein said determining is based on a two-dimensional search map.
