Abstract: Oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions of fragrance product formulations are provided. The microemulsions are clear or at least translucent, sprayable, and non-sticky. Novel combinations of anionic surfactant components (a) and hydrophilic coactives (highly water soluble component (b) or a mixture of highly water soluble (b)(i) and less water soluble polar (b)(ii) components) are used to obtain fragrance product formulations that are free or substantially free of ethanol. The anionic surfactants have a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance ("HLB") modified by the use of classes of anionic surfactant components (a) and commercially available hydrophilic component coactives ((b) or mixture of (b)(i) and (b)(ii)), not previously recognized as effective in this type of system.

Abstract: The invention is concerned with a process for the manufacture of substituted furans which are, in particular, flavorants; thereby 4-hydroxy-2-yn-1-ones or acetals or ketals thereof are cyclized with nucleophilic S-compounds to 3-S-furans, whereby this 3-S atom can be optionally substituted, and the acetylene derivatives, the 4-hydroxy-2-yn-1-ones, can be optionally 1- and/or 4-alkyl or alkenyl substituted.

Abstract: A novel process for the manufacture of a cinnamic acid derivative of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 signifies hydrogen or C.sub.1-8 -alkyl and R.sup.2 signifies hydrogen, C.sub.1-10 -alkyl, C.sub.1-10 -hydroxyalkyl or C.sub.1-4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1-10 -alkyl, is described in which a 4-R.sup.1 O-halobenzene is reacted with acrylic add or an acrylic acid ester CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHCOOR.sup.2 using a heterogeneous palladium catalyst in the presence of the alkanoic acid ammonium salt formed from a C.sub.2-5 -alkanoic acid and an aliphatic mono-, di- or trialkylamine or heterocyclic amine. In the case of the manufacture of the cinnamic acid derivative I in which R.sup.2 signifies hydrogen, the reaction can be carried out in the presence of the amine in place of the alkanoic acid ammonium salt. A further aspect of the described invention comprises reacting the 4-R.sup.1 O-iodobenzene with the product of the Michael addition of an acrylic acid ester CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHCOOR.sup.2', wherein R.sup.

Abstract: Two optically active forms of 4-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-keto-pentanoic acid of the formula ##STR1## wherein carbon atom 4 has the (S)-configuration, and carbon atom 3 can have the (R)-configuration or the (S)-configuration (compound I) are made using a biotransformation process. Compound I may be manufactured by reacting 4-hydroxy-isoleucine (2S, 3R, 4S) of the formula: ##STR2## with microorganisms which have L-amino acid oxidase activity or with an L-amino acid oxidase. Compound I is a flavor precursor and may also be used as an intermediate for the production of the optically active (5S)-3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethyl-2(5H)-furanone: ##STR3## which is useful as a flavorant.

Abstract: A process for the production of ambergris-type labdane spiroketals of general formulae I and II ##STR1## where R represents oxygen or sulphur, useful in the perfumery industry, the said process being characterized by the intramolecular cyclisation of the epoxyketone or its thio analog of general formula III ##STR2## where R.sub.1 represents COCH.sub.3 and R.sub.2 oxygen or sulphur.

Abstract: Novel substituted heterocyclic formamidines are useful as ultraviolet light absorbers, the formamidines having the formula ##STR1## wherein: Ar represents a 2-thiazolyl, 2-pyridyl, 2- 4,6-dimethyl) pyrmidyl or a 4-(2-methyl)quinolyl group, and,R represents a phenyl group or an alkyl group of from one to eight carbon atoms.
