  • Patent number: 6452326
Abstract: A light transmitting container is used to house a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) to reduce heat loss and to increase the luminous efficiency of the lamp. An electrical connector configuration is connected to an electrode of the lamp and adapted to be electrically and mechanically connected to a conventional electrical socket. A driver circuit in the container converts 50 or 60 Hz power to the high frequency power suitable for operating the CCFL. At least one of the electrodes of the CCFL is outside of the container to facilitate heat dissipation. A two-dimensional array of CCFLs may be held by a module housing to form a display for displaying still or moving images and characters. The above-described CCFL configurations may also be used for displaying traffic information.

  • Patent number: 6369867
Abstract: A seamless tiled display employs active liquid crystal display (LCD) and backlight. The active matrix elements of active LCD are mounted on the inside or outside of the front plate or back plate of LCD. A thin front plate and a thin sealing wall are used to reduce the seam width of the tiled LCD. A laser cutting is used for a thin LCD sealing. A spacer added adhesive array is deposited between pixels and between front plate and back plate to guarantee the uniformity of LC cells thickness. A laser riveting is still used for making a robust plastic LCD. A reflective layer is deposited on the side wall of back plate to reflect the light emitted from the backlight and to reduce the apparent seam width. In the backlight, there can be at least one set of red, green and blue light source operated at color sequential mode to display a color image without the use of color filters.

  • Patent number: 6337543
Abstract: A high power cold cathode gas discharge system employs two electrode structures, where each structure includes a plurality of sub-electrodes connected in parallel to a driver so that the current delivered by the system is spread over multiple sub-electrodes. Each sub-electrode is connected to the driver through a current limiting device such as a capacitor which limits the current delivered by each sub-electrode to be below a certain threshold. By spreading the current delivered by the system over multiple sub-electrodes, the useful life of the system will not be reduced because of sputtering, which results in a high power and long life fluorescent lamp and other gas discharge devices.

  • Patent number: 6316872
Abstract: A light transmitting container is used to house a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) to reduce heat loss and to increase the luminous efficiency of the lamp. An electrical connector configuration is connected to an electrode of the lamp and adapted to be electrically and mechanically connected to a conventional electrical socket. At least one of the electrodes of the CCFL is outside of the container to facilitate heat dissipation. A CCFL having an elongated tube portion and enlarged portions for housing larger electrodes is proposed to enhance the longevity and brightness of the CCFL. Larger electrodes are used to generate more electrons in the CCFL, thereby generating more light. Larger electrodes also reduces the temperature of the tube material of the CCFL to enhance the lifetime of the device.

  • Patent number: 5892558
Abstract: An active matrix LCD employs a two-terminal or three-terminal switch structure employing an electrically conductive wire. The wire has an insulating layer thereon forming a wire structure. The wire structure is placed in a groove in a transparent substrate and an electrode layer is deposited on the insulating layer at spaced intervals to form an array of diodes connected in parallel. By applying a suitable voltage to the wire, all of the diodes in parallel are turned on to charge the electrodes to desired electrical potentials on one side of the liquid crystal material. An array of electrodes matching the position of the diodes on the other side of the liquid crystal material are charged to the desired potentials in order to control the color and brightness of the display by controlling the light transmittance of the liquid crystal cells between the two sets of electrodes.

  • Patent number: 5839812
Abstract: The present invention relates to a flat parallel light source using the principle of the mirror reflection and diffuse reflection, which comprises a light source, a diffuse reflective chamber with high reflectance walls, a light coupler, a small hole array at the top surface of said diffuse reflective chamber, a mirror reflective cone array on the small hole array, and a convex lens array on said cone array. The light generated by the light pass through the light coupler into the diffuse reflective chamber, and then pass through the small hole array, mirror reflective cone array, and lens array to form parallel light. The flat parallel light source can generate a high intensity parallel light with excellent parallelism or a given scattering angle parallel light. It can be used for backlighting for all kinds of LCDs, and other equipment where parallel light is needed. It can also be used in LCDs to increase the brightness of the display image and reduce power consumption.
