Abstract: Rust resistant, scratch resistant coatings are formed on glass containers during passage thereof through a tunnel at 500.degree.-720.degree. C. by forming a first fluid stream by passing dry air through a bath of tin tetrachloride, forming a second fluid stream by passing dry air through a bath of phosphorous trichloride or phosphorous oxychloride, combining the two fluid streams to form a fluid coating stream, and introducing the fluid coating stream containing tin tetrachloride and phosphorous halide in a weight ratio of between 2:1 to 9:1 into the tunnel to contact the hot glass containers and form a coating on the glass containers.
Abstract: A method of coating glass containers and a composition for such coating, wherein a one-step application of the coating is effected, with an aqueous mixture of a polyamino-acrylate ester, a cross-linking agent therefor, a wax, and a vinyl amino silane coupling agent applied to the container at a temperature of between about 200.degree.-400.degree. F. upon exit of the containers from an annealing lehr.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for testing the pressure venting characteristics of canning jar lids. A pressure chamber in the form of a mock jar finish has a canning jar lid fastened to it in the manner which the lid will be fastened under actual canning conditions. The chamber and the lid are then placed in a liquid bath which reproduces temperature conditions present during canning, and the chamber and the lid are allowed to stand in the bath until they come to the temperature of the bath. The chamber is then pressurized, and the pressure monitored until the canning jar lid is observed to vent gas; bubbles in the liquid in the bath indicating that venting is occurring. This pressure is then noted and serves as a measure of venting characteristics of the jar lid. Also disclosed is an apparatus for practicing the method.
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for releasably supporting and transporting rigid open-mouthed containers by engaging the interior surface of the container mouth with an inflatable elongated elastomeric diaphragm, means being provided for inflating and deflating the diaphragm. The apparatus is particularly useful in suspending and conveying heated glass bottles through various processing stages wherein various coatings are applied to the outer surfaces of the bottles.
