Patent number: 4946491Abstract: An improved glass tempering apparatus and method is disclosed. A glass sheet is quenched by heating the glass sheet and horizontally transferring the sheet on a roller conveyor into a quenching station having an upper and lower array of nozzles for directing coolant on opposite sides of the glass. A first array of points on the glass sheet are cooled, then the glass is horizontally jogged within the quenching station and a second array of points are cooled. Preferably, the jog distance is selected so that the first and second array of points are uniformly spaced relative to one another. An alternative embodiment of the invention cools a first array of points, horizontally jogs the glass within the quenching station and recools the same array of points with each point being cooled by a different nozzle pair so that the cooled points are uniformly sized and clearly defined with minimum irregularities resulting from roller shrouding and nozzle-to-nozzle variability.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1988Date of Patent: August 7, 1990Assignee: Glasstech, Inc.Inventor: Jonathan Barr

Patent number: 4913720Abstract: A glass sheet tempering method and resultant glass sheet are disclosed as being provided by modulated quenching that initially cools the oppositely facing surfaces of a conveyed glass sheet at a first cooling station (14) with a first rate of heat transfer for a finite time to cool the surfaces from tempering temperature to below the strain point without cooling the center of the glass sheet below the strain point. Thereafter the oppositely facing surfaces of the conveyed glass sheet are cooled within a second cooling station (15) at a second rate of heat transfer less than the first rate to initially cool the center of the glass sheet below the strain point without corresponding surface cooling, and thereafter further cools the center and the sruface. The second rate of heat transfer is of a magnitude so that the surface temperature initially increases without going back substantially above the strain point prior to subsequently again cooling.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1988Date of Patent: April 3, 1990Assignee: Glasstech, Inc.Inventors: Robert Gardon, Alejandro G. Patent number: 4904533Abstract: A gas burner (20) disclosed has general utility but has particular utility when utilized in a closely spaced relationship to roller conveyed glass sheets to provide forced convection heating. The burner (20) includes a cobbustion member (38) in which gas and air are introduced in a tangential relationship with respect to its inner surface to provide a swirling motion that mixes the gas with the air for combustion prior to discharge through outlets (46) to provide the forced convection heating. A glass sheet heated by this gas burner forced convection on the roller conveyor and subsequently cooled has reduced roll-wave distortion and reduced edge distortion as compared to radiantly heated glass sheets.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1989Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: Glasstech, Inc.Inventor: Harold A. Patent number: 4872925Abstract: A photovoltaic cell fabrication method and photovoltaic cell including a layer of amorphous silicon sandwiched between a transparent sheet electrode and a back sheet electrode. A third sheet electrode is insulated from the back sheet electrode and makes an electrical connection with the transparent sheet electrode at isolated areas by penetrating a dielectric layer which insulates the back and third sheet electrodes. The third sheet electrode also penetrates the back sheet electrode and the amorphous silicon layer at the isolated areas which, preferably, form an array of dots or point contacts with the transparent sheet electrode. The transparent sheet electrode is preferably disposed on a glass substrate and the point contacts result in an increase in the active area on the light incident surface of the cell. The frequent electrical connections of the third sheet electrode to the transparent sheet electrode result in lower power losses in the cell.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1987Date of Patent: October 10, 1989Assignee: Glasstech, Inc.Inventor: Harold A.
