Abstract: A compression ring for an engine piston includes an upper and lower face, and an inner face positioned between the upper and lower faces along an inner diameter of the ring. An outer face is positioned between the upper and lower faces along an outer diameter of the ring and is formed by a continuous curve along the axial direction of the ring. The continuous curve has first and second convex surfaces connected by a concave surface with each convex surface defined by first and second radii, respectively. A method of forming a piston compression ring includes machining an outer face of the ring to form a continuous curve along an axial direction of the ring, where the continuous curve has a first convex section and a second convex section connected by an intermediate section.

Abstract: A vehicle roof frame includes an adhering structure having an adhesive carrier and an expanding structural adhesive coupled to at least a portion of an outer surface of the adhesive carrier. The expanding structural adhesive includes an installation state and a structural state, and the structural state has a larger volume than the installation state. The vehicle roof frame also includes a plurality of vehicle frame members that cooperate to form a frame joint and a joint cavity defined within the frame joint. The adhering structure is disposed within the joint cavity and the adhesive carrier and the expanding structural adhesive in the structural state substantially occupies the joint cavity and fixably couples the plurality of framing members such that the frame joint is free of supplemental mechanical connections proximate the joint cavity.
Abstract: A convex fan shroud for use with an automotive engine cooling system having a fan and a fan-cooled, liquid-to-air radiator is disclosed. The convex fan shroud has an optimized shape that leads to high air flow rates through the radiator. The convex fan shroud includes a front frame that defines an air-intake opening, a convex top wall connected to the frame, a convex bottom wall connected to the frame, and a pair of opposed convex side walls connected to the frame and to the top and bottom walls. The interior surfaces of the walls are smooth. The convex walls define a barrel-shaped shroud body that includes a round engine-facing opening to accommodate the fan. In addition to generating a higher flow rate, the disclosed inventive concept for a smooth convex fan shroud is relatively low cost to produce and has a relatively high degree of rigidity.

Abstract: A reinforcing fiber is provided comprising a carbon fiber having a length and outer and inner surfaces defining a wall. The wall has a first cross section which defines an outer diameter and an inner diameter and a wall thickness. The wall thickness of the cylindrical carbon fiber tube is greater than or equal to 2 um.
Abstract: A battery simulator can operate to provide different outputs. These outputs provide different characteristics related to how a device under test operates. In an example, a controller such as an electronic control module (ECM) or battery energy control module (BECM) can be tested. The battery simulator may provide different modes, e.g., a high current mode or a voltage change over time mode. A traction battery simulator may include a controller, analog output circuitry being controlled by the controller to output test current and test voltage, and switching circuitry connected to the analog output circuitry that has a first state and a second state. The first state is to provide an increased change in voltage over change in time relative to the second state. The second state is to provide an increased capacitance over the first state.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for recycling internal combustion engine feedgas exhaust emissions during cold-start conditions. By adjusting a restriction valve provided in an exhaust passage upstream of a catalytic converter, an amount of engine exhaust flowing through the catalytic converter prior to the catalytic converter reaching its operational temperature may be reduced.
Abstract: Vehicles incorporating various methods and devices for mounting a fraction battery include securing the traction battery to a structural member of the vehicle in a manner that releases the traction battery from the structural member of the vehicle in response to an external load applied to the fraction battery that exceeds a threshold. A mounting member includes a slot for guiding movement of the battery away from the external load to reduce or eliminate compressive loading of the battery. Fasteners include a guide portion that cooperates with the slot and a shear portion that secures the battery in a first position but separates from the guide portion in response to the external load to allow the battery to move to a second position away from the external load.
Abstract: A method, comprising generating a water-in-fuel indication responsive to a water-in-fuel content increasing more than a threshold amount within a threshold time of a refueling event is presented.

Abstract: Hybrid polyester-polyether polyols are prepared by polymerizing an alkylene oxide in the presence of a carboxylate initiator. The polymerization is catalyzed with a mixture of double metal cyanide catalyst complex and certain magnesium, group 3-group 15 metal or lanthanide series metal compounds. The presence of the magnesium, Group 3-Group 15 metal or lanthanide series metal (MG3-15LA) compound makes for consistently rapid activation of the double metal cyanide catalyst complex, even in the presence of carboxylate initiator compounds. This leads to greater productivity and reduced manufacturing costs due to shorter cycle times and less waste of raw materials due to the failure of the catalyst to become activated. Once the catalyst is activated, it often polymerizes the alkylene oxide at a faster rate that the DMC catalyst by itself.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for draining condensate from a charge air cooler during a compressor bypass valve event. In one example, an engine controller may open a drain valve in the charge air cooler in response to potential compressor surge conditions. Opening the drain valve may be further based on an amount of condensate in the charge air cooler and a required decrease in pressure at an outlet of the compressor during the compressor bypass valve event.
Abstract: A transmission gearing arrangements produces up to ten forward and one reverse speed ratios by selective engagement of various combinations of four shift elements. Each disclosed transmission includes four planetary gear sets and at least six shift elements. One of the shift elements may be a dog clutch. Optional passive one way brakes simplify the control.
Abstract: A vehicle's dynamic handling state, driver inputs to the vehicle, etc. may be examined to determine one or more measures of driver workload. Driver interface tasks may then be delayed and/or prevented from executing based on the driver workload so as to not increase the driver workload. Alternatively, driver interface tasks may be scheduled for execution based on the driver workload and caused to execute according to the schedule, for example, to minimize the impact the executing driver interface tasks have on driver workload.
