Abstract: A method of integrating product information management with vehicle design includes the steps of selecting a vehicle program requirement from a library stored in a memory of a computer system, wherein the library is accessed through an information portal on the computer system. The method also includes the steps of selecting an information database containing information related to the design of the vehicle from the library, wherein the information database is accessed through the information portal, and determining if the information from the information database correlates with the program requirement. The method further includes the steps of using the information from the information database in the design of the vehicle, if the information from the information database correlates with the program requirement.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine that can be operated in compression ignition mode, comprising a fuel injector (2) for each cylinder; a fuel injection control unit (4) for controlling fuel injection quantity and a piston (5) in each cylinder whose compression action causes a mixture of air and fuel to be ignited. The engine is further provided with inlet and outlet valves (6, 7) and sensors (12–16) for measuring various engine operating parameters, is disclosed. During compression ignition mode, the control unit controls the fuel injector to perform a first fuel injection before, and a second fuel injection after top dead center of the piston stroke during or after a negative valve overlap period. A method for operating the engine and a computer readable storage device (4) having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a computer to implement a compression ignition for an internal combustion engine is also described.

Abstract: A fastener is configured for use in the manufacture of molded plastic components that will be subsequently attached to other components by the fastener. The low profile head portion of the fastener has a rounded contoured and convoluted top surface to facilitate the flow of plastic material around the head portion during the molding process. The underside of the head portion is formed with a square face surrounded circumferentially by circumferential land surfaces that provides a high pull-out force resistance for the fastener. The square face on the underside and convoluted top surface of the head portion provides a high spin-out torque resistance without sacrificing the pull-out force resistance. The rounded edges of the head portion are compatible with molding processes to allow the flow of plastic material to fully encapsulate the head portion within the molded plastic component.

Abstract: A linkage mechanism operably associated with the front and rear doors of an automotive vehicle that pivots a bumper device into an interfering position with respect to the closing of the front door against the B-pillar of the vehicle when the rear door remains opened. The linkage mechanism includes a spring-loaded actuation lever that moves in response to the opening of the rear door to cause through connecting links the pivotal movement of the bumper device from a retracted position to an interfering position to interfere with the closing of the front door. The closing of the rear door causes the retraction of the pivoted bumper device to enable the closing of the front door. A manually activated stop lever is pivotally movable against the bumper device to prevent the pivotal movement thereof out of the retracted position even when the rear door is opened.

Abstract: A recessed storage well is formed in the rear load floor of an automotive vehicle to provide cargo transport capabilities for wet cargo. The recessed storage well is provided with a drain to permit the flow of liquids collected within the recessed storage well to be discharged externally of the vehicle. The recessed storage well is formed from impervious material to permit the storage of wet articles of cargo without dampening the carpet covering on the rear load floor. The drain is seated in an automotive frame component by a rubber grommet that prevents the transfer of vibrational noise to the recessed storage well. The drain enables the use of a water spray in clean-up operations by allowing the collected water to drain away from the recessed storage well.

Abstract: The method includes the steps of determining a number of gear teeth for each gear and pinion that, in combination, would produce desired gear ratios. Current gearset parameters including distances and angles relating the positions of the gears and pinions are determined. For a predetermined angular rotation of a selected gear or pinion, and using the current gearset parameters, an error is determined representing a difference in phases of a tooth on the selected gear or pinion into its mesh cycle. A first phase is determined along a first portion of a drive path of meshing gears and pinions, and a second phase is determined along a second portion of the drive path distinct from the first portion. One or more of the current gearset parameters are repetitively changed to determine a set of correspond optimal gearset parameters, for which the error is equal to or less than an acceptable error. Then a gearset having the optimal gearset parameters is produced.
Abstract: An emergency trunk release handle for an automobile displays the graphics explaining the use and function of the handle by cutting out the material from the handle. Forming the emergency release handle from a phosphorescent plastic material that can be formed by a molding process, such as injection molding, the cut-out graphics show as darkened areas, when viewed in the dark confines of an automobile trunk, to provide a high degree of visibility for the graphics. The graphics are also visible when seen against the dark carpet in the interior of an opened trunk cavity. The formation of the graphics is accomplished by coring the mold in the configuration of the desired graphics and by forming the plastic material in the mold around the cores. The resultant handle structure is thus formed in a cost effective manner that reduces the process failure potential during the manufacturing of the handle.

Abstract: An electronic valve actuation system and control method is described. The valve timing is changed between early and late intake valve closing depending on engine operating conditions. Further, valve timing is adjusted to control engine airflow or engine torque. Finally, air-fuel ratio is adjusted based on feedback from an exhaust gas oxygen sensor as well as an estimate of air, fuel, and residual exhausted from cylinders operating with late valve closing (after bottom dead center) timing.
