  • Patent number: 7093568
Abstract: Method and system embody a valve timing strategy to control the autoignition timing of a four stroke internal combustion engine (10) operated in an HCCI mode at different engine operating conditions such as different engine speed and torque. A particular valve timing strategy varies lift timing of the intake valve (20) relative to the exhaust valve (28), or vice versa, and relative to top dead center in response to a change in engine torque, for example, to vary amount of trapped residual burned gas in the combustion chamber (12) flowing to an intake or exhaust port (16,18) and back to the combustion chamber during which the residual gas is cooled. Control of the flow of residual gas between the combustion chamber and intake or exhaust port and thus its temperature by the valve timing strategy, in turn, is used to control the temperature of the fresh air/residual gas/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber (12) and thus autoignition timing in response to a change in engine torque.

  • Patent number: 7094299
Abstract: An innovative robotic foam application process that integrates system communications, non-contact vehicle insertion point locations, and applications controls to accurately dispense a two-component structural foam at a high volume and flow rate. The process begins by first inserting a baffle within the support structure. After an electrocoat application and bake, the baffles expand and are sealed within the support structure to form cavities having a fill hole. A hydraulic driven robotic dispensing system equipped with a high-pressure static mixer senses the respective fill hole, moves a robotic arm to a location sensed, and injects a high volume of mixed two-component viscous material within each of the respective located fill holes at a high fill rate. After dispensing, the viscous material undergoes an exothermic curing reaction to cure and is expanded to substantially fill each cavity.

  • Publication number: 20060184299
Abstract: A control system (18) and method for an automotive vehicle (10) is provided in which various dynamic control system sensors are monitored and used to activate a dynamic control system which is indicative of a vehicle instability. Vehicle instability may also be determined using an energy threshold. Once vehicle instability is determined, a roll trend is determined in response thereto. The roll trend may use an accumulative directional indicator to determine whether the trend of the vehicle is toward rolling over. If the vehicle is tending to roll over, a safety device such as an airbag may be deployed.

  • Patent number: 7089912
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine operable in compression ignition mode, said engine comprising a fuel supply means, a piston in each cylinder causing ignition during compression ignition mode, at least one inlet and one exhaust valve, a control unit that controls the valve timing and fuel quantity, and at least one sensor for measuring an engine operation parameter. The following steps are performed when switching from spark ignition to compression ignition mode: controlling the exhaust and intake valves to perform a negative valve overlap to retain exhaust residual gas, determining a current combustion phasing timing, and correcting the combustion phasing by increasing the retained exhaust residual gas fraction by stepwise control of a combustion related parameter. The invention further relates to an arrangement and a computer readable device for controlling the combustion process.

  • Patent number: 7090061
Abstract: A snap ring having improved retention characteristics is configured for use inside a cylindrical cavity. The cavity includes a retention device having a retention surface forming an obtuse angle with the cavity wall. As an axial load is applied to the snap ring, it moves along the retention surface, thereby experiencing a reduction in diameter. The snap ring includes a circumferential discontinuity defined by two generally radial planar surfaces, or ring ends. The discontinuity is configured such that the ring ends will abut one another before the snap ring diameter is reduced beyond the retaining diameter.

  • Patent number: 7089102
Abstract: An automatic transmission ratio shift control system and method for a powertrain having an engine and multiple-ratio gearing controlled by friction elements actuated by hydraulic pressure, an electronic controller for establishing torque transitions among the friction elements as the gear ratio changes, the engine speed being controlled by an electronic throttle control. The strategy employs an electronic throttle and closed loop engine speed control and uses fuel and air as an energy source to increase engine speed during a power-off downshift. The engine speed is boosted to a level close to the synchronous speed in conjunction with release of the off-going friction element. The on-coming friction element is then applied as the engine speed approaches a desired speed. The engine speed increase is timed to lead an increase in torque converter speed.
