Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention is an improved front-end to body-side joint (10) for an automotive vehicle. This joint (10) includes an integral front end structure (12) having a fender attachment portion (16) and one or more hinge-reinforcement portions (14). The fender attachment portion (16) is coupled to a fender (24). Moreover, the hinge-reinforcement portions (14) are attached to a pillar member (28) of a vehicle body (46) for supporting a door (20). The integral front end structure (12) is a master-locating component for positioning the fender (24) and the door (20) in a predetermined configuration within the joint (10).

Abstract: A rear load floor is formed with a first recessed storage well for holding cargo within the rear cargo area of the automobile. A second recessed storage well is formed in the floor of the first recessed storage well to store the spare tire and jack assembly. A removable panel is provided to cover the spare tire recessed well and maintain the integrity of the bottom of the first recessed storage well for the loading of cargo thereon. The second recessed storage well is positioned off center with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle to accommodate the mounting of the vehicle exhaust system. The first recessed storage well includes a flange located at the conventional load floor position and supported from the rear side rails of the vehicle body.
Abstract: The invention relates to a regulation system for voltage regulation in the electrical power supply system for a motor vehicle, which contains a supercapacitor. In a short-term standby mode (ST), the voltage (U) of the supercapacitor is regulated such that a voltage window (?U) is maintained, thus ensuring a minimum energy content in the supercapacitor (4). During a long-term standby mode (LT), the supercapacitor (4) is charged to a voltage (Uh) only when an activation signal (tA) occurs. The energy for charging is drawn from a second energy store, in particular a battery.

Abstract: A multi-chambered bumper airbag for deployment from the bumper of a vehicle in the event of a collision with another vehicle is provided. The airbag comprises a main inflatable portion that, when inflated, absorbs the energy from contact with a structural member of the struck vehicle. The airbag also has one or more secondary inflatable portions concentric with the main inflatable portion. Because the secondary inflatable portions have a lower gas pressure than the main inflatable portion, they are used to cushion the occupant of the struck vehicle should the occupants' head and neck be forced out of the window of the struck vehicle.

Abstract: A bi-directional dual coil half bridge converter adapted to be coupled to a dual coil actuator of a cylinder valve in an internal combustion engine is described. In one example, the converter has a first and second capacitor and a voltage source, where the converter is actuated via switches to individually energizing coils in said dual coil actuator. A voltage regulator is also shown for maintaining midpoint voltage during unequal loading of different actuator coils in the converter.
Abstract: A multipurpose power point for use by, and accessible to, the driver or other occupant of a vehicle, includes a generally cylindrical terminal housing having center terminal and at least one detent for retaining a ignitor plug within the terminal housing. An overtravel preventer attached to an outer housing portion of the power point engages the detent and subjects the detent to a radially inwardly directed force sufficient to prevent the detent from deforming plastically in response to forces placed upon the detent by power consuming devices inserted into the terminal housing.
Abstract: A tuned mass damper for sound-dampening brake squeal noise is located within a hole formed in a brake component such as a backplate supporting a brake pad. The location of the hole and the weight and geometry of the tuned mass damper are tailored to provide effective damping for the particular frequencies that are to be eliminated in the brake system. Locating the tuned mass damper inside of a hole in the component has packaging and manufacturing advantages, and results in a tuned mass damper that is less susceptible to damage when in use. The hole may be blind, the bottom of the hole being thin enough to serve as a spring member to which a vibration damping mass is attached. In one embodiment, the tuned mass damper is a module adapted for insertion into the hole in the brake backplate. Contact between the module and inner surfaces of the hole transfers mechanical vibration of the backplate to the tuned mass damper.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for controlling operation of an engine coupled to an exhaust treatment catalyst. Under predetermined conditions, the method operates an engine with a first group of cylinders combusting a lean air/fuel mixture and a second group of cylinders pumping air only (i.e., without fuel injection). In addition, the engine control method also provides the following features in combination with the above-described split air/lean mode: idle speed control, sensor diagnostics, air/fuel ratio control, adaptive learning, fuel vapor purging, catalyst temperature estimation, default operation, and exhaust gas and emission control device temperature control. In addition, the engine control method also changes to combusting in all cylinders under preselected operating conditions such as fuel vapor purging, manifold vacuum control, and purging of stored oxidants in an emission control device.

Abstract: A gearset assembly includes a pinion carrier containing first, second and third long pinions pinion mutually spaced angularly about an axis, and supported for rotation on the carrier, and three pairs of short pinions, each supported for rotation on the carrier, the pinions of the first pair meshing with the first long pinion, the pinions of the second pair meshing with the second long pinion, and the pinions of the third pair meshing with the third long pinion.
Abstract: The present invention provides a fast learn algorithm for quickly providing data to a data table and a controller. Existing data is considered, such that information gathered from prior events is not arbitrarily overwritten. An error is determined for a first data cell based on current operating conditions and the occurrence of an event. Weighting factors are then applied to data cells removed from the first data cell, such that some or all of the data cells in the data table can be populated based on the data input into the first data cell.
Abstract: A free piston engine is configured with a pair of opposed engine cylinders located on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly. An inner piston assembly includes a pair of inner pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with a push rod connected between the inner pistons. The push rod extends through an inner pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. An outer piston assembly includes a pair of outer pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with at least one pull rod connected between the outer pistons. The pull rod extends through an outer pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. The movement of the inner and outer piston assemblies during engine operation will cause the fluid plungers to pump fluid from a low pressure container into a high pressure chamber as a means of storing the energy output from the engine.
Abstract: Methods of performing threat assessment of objects for a vehicle include detecting an object. Kinematics of the vehicle and of the object are determined. A brake threat number and a steering threat number are determined in response to the kinematics of the vehicle and the object. The threat posed by the object is determined in response to the brake threat number and the steering threat number.

Abstract: A system and method for indicating required maintenance of an air filter used with an internal combustion engine. The system includes a throttle plate for adjusting an amount of airflow passing into cylinders of the engine. The system includes a throttle plate position sensor and a processor. The processor is responsive to a throttle plate position signal produced by the throttle plate sensor, for determining, as a function of such throttle plate position signal, whether the air filter is in need of maintenance. When a manifold absolute pressure sensor is provided, the processor is responsive to a first reading of such manifold absolute pressure sensor taken at a first time and at a second reading of the manifold absolute pressure sensor taken at a second time, for determining, as a function of a difference between such first and second readings whether the air filter is in need of maintenance.
Abstract: A method for controlling starting of an internal combustion engine in a hybrid electric vehicle powertrain having multiple power flow paths to vehicle traction wheels from the engine and from an electric motor. A smoothness factor is calculated to determine how smooth an engine start should be. Engine operating variables regulate engine smoothness during engine start events as determined by the calculated smoothness factor appropriate for selected vehicle operating conditions.
