Abstract: A system and method for employing BLE nodes in a PEPS system to determine whether a FOB is within or outside of a vehicle. The method includes interrogating the FOB using a signal transmitted by a BLE device on the vehicle to determine whether the FOB is in a predetermined vicinity of the vehicle and receiving a Bluetooth signal at the BLE device that is transmitted by the FOB if the FOB is in the vicinity of the vehicle. The method also included determining a transmit power of the Bluetooth signal transmitted by the FOB and determining a receive power of the Bluetooth signal transmitted by the FOB and received by the BLE device. The method uses the transmit power and the receive power in a comparison process to determine whether the FOB is inside or outside of the vehicle.

Abstract: A system and method for reducing the corrosive effects of an air/hydrogen front in a fuel cell stack. The method includes shutting down the fuel cell stack and then initiating a hydrogen sustaining process where hydrogen is periodically injected into an anode side of the fuel cell stack while the stack is shut down for a predetermined period of time. The method determines that the hydrogen sustaining process has ended, and then purges the anode side and a cathode side of the fuel cell stack with air after the hydrogen sustaining process has ended and the stack is still shut-down.
Abstract: A system and method for providing a user of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) more flexibility and control regarding the selection of heating modes, without adversely affecting vehicle engine emissions. According to one embodiment, when the HEV is in a normal heating mode, the user is able to switch to an economy or deferred heating mode, so long as the switch takes place during the following ignition cycle. When the HEV is in an economy heating mode the user is able to switch to a normal heating mode right away, but is only allowed to do so once per ignition cycle. In both instances, the switch between heating modes is initiated by the user through a non-emissions related system, such as a vehicle infotainment module or climate control module.

Abstract: A wheel catcher assembly can inhibit a wheel from moving toward a passenger compartment of a vehicle when an external force is applied to the vehicle. The wheel catcher assembly generally includes an energy absorbing bracket and a plate coupled to the energy absorbing bracket. The energy absorbing bracket includes a plurality of ridges and grooves so as to define a waveform portion. The plate is coupled to the energy absorbing bracket at the ridges such that an external force applied to the wheel catcher assembly is transferable from the plate to the energy absorbing bracket.

Abstract: A transmission is provided having an input member, an output member, two planetary gear sets one of which is a selectively speed reducing gear set, another two planetary gear sets that may be stacked or nested to form a planetary gear set assembly, a plurality of coupling members and a plurality of torque transmitting devices. Each of the planetary gear sets includes first, second and third members. The torque transmitting devices include clutches and brakes.

The systems and methods are configured to communicate with a driver based on input from the eye tracking device. Abstract: An electroactive material for use in an electrochemical cell, like a lithium ion battery, is provided. The electroactive material comprises a multifunctional hybrid protective coating system formed over an electroactive material. The coating system includes a first oxide-based coating disposed on one or more surfaces of the electroactive material, followed by a second coating deposited via a non-aqueous process. The second coating may be a fluoride-based, nitride-based, or carbide-based coating. The first and second coatings may be applied by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to form conformal ultrathin layers over the electroactive materials. Such a multifunctional hybrid protective coating system can suppress formation of gases within the electrochemical cell and also minimize formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layers on the electrode to improve battery performance. Methods for making such materials and using such materials in electrochemical cells are likewise provided.

Abstract: A clutch housing for an automatic transmission includes an aluminum hub and a drum portion which is laser or friction welded to the hub. Due to the different strength requirements of the hub and drum, the hub is fabricated of 6082-T6 aluminum or a material of similar strength and malleability and is forged or die cast. The hub includes male splines or gear teeth disposed on its periphery. The cylindrical drum is fabricated of 7075-T6 aluminum or a material of similar or greater strength and similar malleability and is roller died or stamped and includes female splines or gear teeth on its inner surface as well as a plurality of radially oriented lubrication openings or slots which facilitate flow of lubricating fluid from the interior to the exterior of the cylindrical drum.
Abstract: An absorbing bracket can be coupled to a vehicle body and can absorb energy from an external force applied to the vehicle body. In an embodiment, the energy absorbing bracket includes a bracket body at least partly made of a rigid material. The bracket body includes a deformable wall defining a first edge and a second edge opposite the first edge. The first edge is parallel to the second edge. The bracket body defines a plurality of slots extending through the deformable wall. Each slot extends along a slot axis. Further, each slot axis is obliquely angled relative to the first edge.
Abstract: A hybrid powertrain has a turbine generator having a shaft. The hybrid powertrain includes a power-split hybrid transmission that has an input member, an output member, and a ratio-controlling motor/generator controllable to vary a speed ratio of the input member to the output member. The turbine generator is in electrical communication with the ratio-controlling motor/generator to electrically power the ratio-controlling motor/generator when the ratio-controlling motor/generator functions as a motor during a power-split operating mode.
Abstract: A multi-height energy-directing device, for facilitating staged welding together of workpieces. The device includes multiple elements extending from a body, wherein the elements do not all have a same height. Each element of a first group of the elements has a first height while each element of a second group of the elements has a second height differing from the first height. The elements are configured to channel welding energy through the device in a predetermined manner. The predetermine manner includes channeling the energy through taller, primary, elements, of said elements, in an initial stage of the welding process, while passing none through shorter, secondary, elements, of said elements, in the initial stage.
Abstract: A torque requesting module generates a torque request for an engine based on driver input. A model predictive control (MPC) module: identifies sets of possible target values based on the torque request, each of the sets of possible target values including target pressure ratios across a throttle valve; determines predicted operating parameters for the sets of possible target values, respectively; determines cost values for the sets of possible target values, respectively; selects one of the sets of possible target values based on the cost values; and sets target values based on the possible target values of the selected one of the sets, respectively, the target values including a target pressure ratio across the throttle valve. A target area module determines a target opening area of the throttle valve based on the target pressure ratio. A throttle actuator module controls the throttle valve based on the target opening.

Abstract: A system and method for transferring torque from a prime mover to a transmission includes a coupling device, a hydraulic control system and a control module. The coupling device includes a torque converter clutch (TCC), where the coupling device is located between an output of the prime mover and an input of the transmission. The TCC is actuated between a fully engaged position, a slip mode where slip occurs, and a fully disengaged position. The hydraulic control system includes a controller device that communicates an actuation pressure to the TCC. The actuation pressure actuates the TCC between the fully engaged position, the slip mode, and the fully disengaged position. The controller is in communication with the TCC, the output of the prime mover, the input of the transmission, and the controller device of the hydraulic control system. The controller regulates the actuation pressure.
