Patent number: 4681663Abstract: A system and a method useful in the formation of electrodes for use in electrochemical cells are disclosed. The system includes a pair of conductive end electrodes spaced apart from one another and situated in an aqueous electrolyte. A pair of precursor electrodes are placed in the electrolyte, between the end electrodes. Each of these precursor electrodes comprise a material to be selectively reduced or oxidized disposed on a conductive substrate. The precursor electrodes are in a configuration substantially precluding contact between the electrolyte and the substrates thereof. The end electrodes and the precursor electrodes are in electrical contact with a power supply to effect a current flow in the electrolyte thereby reducing or oxidizing the material of the precursor electrodes. Restraining forces are applied to the precursor electrodes to substantially maintain the dimensions thereof during the electrode charging process.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1986Date of Patent: July 21, 1987Assignee: Gould Inc.Inventor: Harvey N. Patent number: 4677078Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel method and apparatus which can provide continuous monitoring of the oxygen content of a gas over an indefinite period of time and at a minimal cost.In the novel apparatus of the present invention, a light source and a light sensitive detector are disposed within the atmosphere to be measured, and a polymeric film formed from a manganese tertiary phosphine polymer complex is deposited between the light source and the detector. As oxygen pressure increases or decreases a change in color intensity of the film takes place which controls passage of light from the light source to the detector. The detector in turn is suitably connected to an audio and/or visual warning device and/or a recorder which will provide the desired form of warning.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1984Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Gould Inc.Inventors: Karl Minten, William Krug

Patent number: 4632513Abstract: An optical coupler and method of making same is described. The coupling ratio of the coupler is polarization-insensitive. The optical coupler described herein is made from single-mode optical fibers. Each optical fiber has a length of nearly exposed core which is fused to the exposed core of the other optical fiber while the fibers are maintained in parallel juxtaposition with one another without twisting. By creating a fused core coupler from single-mode optical fibers in which the cores are in parallel juxtaposition with one another, the coupling ratio of the subject invention does not change with changes in polarization of light passing through each single-mode fiber and, thus, is polarization insensitive.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1985Date of Patent: December 30, 1986Assignee: Gould Inc.Inventors: David W.
