Abstract: An apparatus and method for the monitoring of a web in a machine processing such web including at least one sensor positioned along the path of the web. The sensor includes a transmitter for transmitting a monitoring beam to the web and a receiver for receiving part of the monitoring beam returned from the web. The receiver is connected to a signal processor for measuring the interval between the transmitting and the receiving. The signal processor produces a control pulse to the machine when the interval exceeds a predetermined tolerated range. The signal processor is a computer programmed such that the tolerated range is set larger prior to the arrival of the signal than after the arrival.
Abstract: In the case of an apparatus for the contact-free application of a liquid strip, more particularly a strip of glue, on a moving web of material, comprising at least one application head, which is provided with at least one nozzle arranged at a distance from the web of material and a valve adapted to put the nozzle into and out of operation and adapted to be operated in accordance with the desired pattern of application, the aim of the invention is to provide such an improvement using simple and low-price means that despite the contact-free application of liquid high accuracy becomes possible. This accomplished by a modification such that the timing of the valve is modified to depart from the basic values, which are dependent on the application pattern, in accordance with a correction value which is a function of the speed of the web of material and at least the distance of the web from the nozzle.
Abstract: In the case of a web breakage detector for web processing machines and more particularly for web feed printing machines, comprising a device for monitoring the web tension and adapted to produce a signal in the event of the web tension decreasing, a high degree of reliability and ease of operation are possible if said monitoring device is designed in the form of a pressure measuring device, which comprises a web pressure sensor for detecting the pressure in a gap delimited during normal operation on the one hand by the web and on the other hand by a stationary cover passed by the web, such sensor being adapted to produce a signal in the event of a pressure drop occurring in the gap.
Abstract: In an apparatus for severing and holding a torn web for a web processing machine and more particularly for a web feed rotary printing press, comprising a knife beam having a stationary knife and arranged across the conveying plane of the web, and furthermore a strike beam having a hump adapted to come into functional engagement with the knife and which by means of an associated push-out means is able to be lifted and lowered, said means being adapted to be activated by a web tear detector, it is possible to have a design with simple and low-cost means so that the device is not only of universal application but furthermore ensures a high degree of operator safety, if the knife beam comprises two identical, bar-like knife carriers holding the knife between them, which adjacent to their side facing the strike beam are provided with symmetrically arranged holders for elastic bars flanking the knife, which bars project in relation to the cutting edge of the knife and are spaced apart by a distance at least equal t
Abstract: In order to catch a broken printed web, which is gripped downstream from a printing unit, and more particularly downstream from the last printing unit of a roll feed rotary printing press, between a driven roll and at least one yoke which is able to be pivoted against the roll in response to the signal of a switch sensing breaking of the web, to ensure a high degree of operational reliability, the roll is initially run at a higher speed than the web and then the effective speed of the roll is made equal to the web speed by the use of a drive device with at least one yielding means therein, the torque transmitted to the yielding means being reduced to a value lower than the web break value at the earliest when the yoke comes into engagement with the roll.

Abstract: In a web break detecting device for web processing machines, more particularly web fed rotary printing presses, comprising at least one sensing means adapted for cooperation with the web and preferable in the form of a single path photoelectric detector whose beam is normally interrupted by the web and which is adapted to produce a signal if the position of the web should be displaced, in order to achieve a particularly high degree of reliability and very short response times, each sensing means, which is arranged adjacent to a longitudinal edge of the web, is provided with a deflecting means, by means of which a deflecting thrust may be produced permanently acting adjacent to the part of the associated longitudinal edge of the web, and which during normal operation is overridden by the web tension, such thrust causing the longitudinal edge of the web to moved out of the plane of the web during trouble-free operation, when the web tension fails, in relation to the sensing means.
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for joining at least two webs or running lengths of material together by means of at least one strip of adhesive applied to at least one of the webs in such a manner that the consumption of adhesive is reduced and greater reliability is achieved. This is made possible by using an adhesive having a viscosity which is close to the viscosity of water and causing the adhesive to be acted upon by a low pressure and to be filtered prior to application to the associated web.
Abstract: A method for folding a paper web in which a liquid folding adjuvant is applied along a folding line so that an improved fold is produced which is sharper if the liquid folding adjuvant is heated, preferably in a continuous flow heater, to a temperature of the order of 30.degree. C. to 60.degree. C. dependent on the type of paper being processed.

Abstract: In the context of a stop motion device for a web feed printing press comprising a web interrupting device placed on the delivery side of a printing unit of the printing press and having a slot for the web from the unit to run, in order to achieve greater ease of operation and functional reliability there is at least one web tear detector switch which is structurally united with the web interrupting device and is adapted to respond to contact with the web and is placed clear of a plane occupied by the web during trouble-free operation of the press and in a position at which there will be an angular deflection of the web, free of tension, caused by an entraining cylinder, when the web tears.
