    Abstract: A single-sided shuttle-type blow molding apparatus having an extruder for substantially continuously extruding a thermoplastic material in tubular form at a moldable temperature downwardly along a vertical axis. The apparatus includes a mold having a set of mold parts adapted to open and close relative to each other to define, when closed, a mold cavity. A shuttle having the mold mounted thereon is arranged to move along a closed path from a first position wherein the mold engages, when open, a finite length of the thermoplastic tube, to a second position away from the first position. The apparatus further includes a blow head adapted to blow the finite length of the thermoplastic tube to form the container as the mold moves from the first position to the second position of the closed path. The apparatus includes no more than one mold. A method is also described.

    Abstract: An apparatus for reforming an annular end sealing surface of a molded plastic container includes a head having an annular contact surface and a drive for bringing the annular contact surface into contact with the annular end sealing surface of the container. The head and the container do not rotate relative to each other during this contact reforming operation. Heat is applied through the contact surface to the end sealing surface while the surfaces are in contact to raise the temperature at the end sealing surface to at least the softening temperature of the plastic material, so that the end sealing surface is softened and reformed by heat and contact with the contact surface.

    Abstract: A mold system for blow molding hollow plastic containers includes an extruder for providing a hollow tube of plastic material having a longitudinal axis. Three mold segments include at least two mold segments that are movable against the third mold segment, in directions perpendicular to the tube axis, between a closed position in which the mold segments form a hollow mold cavity in which the tube is captured and an open position spaced from the tube axis. A blow pin is disposed on one of the mold segments to pierce the tube in the closed position of the mold segments. One of the mold segments may be a mold core movably mounted on a second of the mold segments, and cylinders are mounted on the second mold segment for moving the mold core between an extended position and a retracted position with respect to the second mold segment. The blow pin may be movably mounted on the mold core.

    Abstract: A method of making a preform assembly includes providing a preform having a closed end, and providing an attachment object having a ring. The attachment object is assembled to the preform by telescoping the ring over the closed end of the preform until the ring is brought into abutting engagement with a portion of the preform in such a way that interference between the ring and the portion of the preform prevents dislodgement or removal of the attachment object during subsequent processing of the preform assembly. The attachment object in the disclosed embodiments of the invention may be a handle, a label or a shroud. The ring on the attachment object may be circumferentially continuous or circumferentially split. Engagement between the attachment object ring and the preform may be by engagement with one or more external protrusions on the surface of the preform, or may be by interference press fit engagement between the ring and the external surface of the preform.

The first mold set is then moved horizontally away to permit the finite length of thermoplastic tube therein to be blown into a hollow article, and thereafter removed from the first mold set at a second position of the first mold set.

    Abstract: A one-piece integrally molded container includes a finish having a deck and a pair of outlet openings surrounded by associated annular walls. A peripheral ring extends upwardly from the deck, and has a radial lip that helps retain the container in the mold tooling during the forming operation. The finish has a radial bead over which a bead on the inside diameter of a closure skirt snaps to secure the closure to the container. Annular walls on the closure surrounding the closure dispensing openings are received in plug sealing engagement within the annular walls surrounding the outlet openings on the container finish deck.
