Patent number: 7125249Abstract: An orthodontic bracket design is disclosed together with the associated method of attachment to a tooth wherein the bracket contains an integral light source such as a solid state emitter. The bracket is placed on a tooth using a tool that also provides electrical power to the bracket to cause the integral light emitter to produce radiation of an appropriate wavelength to cure the adhesive used to attach the bracket to a tooth. The electrically powered bracket system overcomes many of the variabilities associated with the current clinical present practice of bonding orthodontic brackets to teeth to provide faster, stronger, and more consistent bonding.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2004Date of Patent: October 24, 2006Assignee: Great Lakes Orthodontics, Ltd.Inventor: Mark D. Patent number: 7121824Abstract: A facebow which overcomes the adverse effects and limitations of current designs by rotating the maxilla in a downward and forward direction, which assists in correcting anterior open bites. This is accomplished by a design that produces forces above the center of resistance of the maxilla and parallel to the Frankfurt horizontal plane. The extra-oral headgear design is characterized by providing two independent adjustments (forehead width and horizontal/vertical dimensions) that allow the appliance to be customized to each patient. In particular, the two independent adjustments are provided by a fully adjustable forehead pad and bilateral adjustable blocks on opposite sides of the facebow extra-oral frame to provide horizontal and vertical adjustments.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2004Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Assignee: Great Lakes Orthodontics, Ltd.Inventors: Ahmet Ozlem Keles, Brian Willison

Patent number: 6786718Abstract: An adjusting tool and associated method of use for turning orthodontic expansion screws are described. The tool or device consists of a contra-angled molded plastic handle or housing with a rotatable pin at the distal end for inserting into an expansion screw located in a patient's mouth. The tool housing is designed to limit the angular rotation of the pin to the arc required for insertion and subsequent activation of the orthodontic screw. When rotated to the position associated with screw activation, the pin is captured and held in place by a locking mechanism which then requires the tool to be disengaged from the screw prior to its removal from the patient's mouth. This feature eliminates the possibility of reversing and deactivating the expansion screw by pulling the expansion key straight out of the mouth. A manual release mechanism on the tool frees the pin to allow the pin to be rotated back to the insertion position.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2002Date of Patent: September 7, 2004Assignee: Great Lakes Orthodontics, Ltd.Inventors: Mark D. Patent number: 5645421Abstract: An orthodontic appliance debonder for minimizing the time and effort on the part of the clinician in removing bondable orthodontic appliances, i.e. those having a plastic body secured to the crowns of the teeth by an orthodontic bonding agent. In accordance with the invention, a screw is incorporated in the plastic body of the appliance, in particular in the occlusal portion thereof. The screw is oriented substantially vertically when the patient's head is in an upright position and preferably is positioned over the first molar. A thin layer of plastic occlusal to the screw maintains the integrity of the seal between the plastic body and the tooth. This thin layer of plastic is compromised when the screw is activated, such as being turned or rotated by an Allen wrench type tool, thus breaking the bond or seal between the plastic body and the tooth. The appliance lifts up in a manner similar to a car being lifted up by a screw type jack.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1995Date of Patent: July 8, 1997Assignee: Great Lakes Orthodontics Ltd.Inventor: Gary Lee Slootsky
