  • Patent number: 4314720
Abstract: A split ring locking rim assembly for releasably securing a head or cover to a container having a split ring with two ends positioned substantially adjacent to one another with a raised part of eyelet thereon space from one end of the ring to receive a portion of a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism includes a lever shaped so as to align the ring during operation which is pivotally connected to one end of the ring with the other end of the ring pivotally connected to a connecting link which is pivotally connected to the lever. The lever includes a tongue with a raised portion thereon in the form of an eyelet and in operation the lever serves to bring the ring ends together sealing the cover or head to the container while the lever tongue enters the receptacle on the ring with the raised portion on the tongue passing therethrough wherein this raised portion acts as a retaining means for the lever in its closed position while also providing a means for securing a sealing wire.

  • Patent number: 4263860
Abstract: A drum with sealed end closures and the method of forming the drum in which a tubular shell is formed to define drum side walls. An end closure is applied to at least one end of the shell with the adjacent peripheral edges of the shell end closure being formed into a circumferentially extending chime with the peripheral edges defining said chime being in abutting surface-to-surface contact and folded to provide a seam with five layers of material of said edges being in a transverse radial direction. The chime is thereafter formed into a reinforced chime folded to provide a seam of predetermined shape with seven layers of material of the edges being in a transverse radial direction and having increased sealing, handling, and strength characteristics while retaining a minimum desired length for the seam.

  • Patent number: 4201306
Abstract: An all-plastic drum construction permits a variety of sizes and capacity of drum by utilizing an extruded tube for the drum side walls of selected diameter and length proportional to the drum capacity desired. An injection molded bottom closure is welded to the bottom end of the tube by a thermoplastic bonding material having dispersed iron particles which are excited when exposed to induction heating thereby facilitating the melting of the thermoplastic. This welding material is disposed within a cavity defined by the bottom closure and bottom end of the tube and when subjected to induction heating and pressure fills the cavity to effectuate the bond between surfaces of the bottom closure and bottom end of the tube. A tight head drum is formed by securing by a similar welding technique a top closure to the upper end of the tube. In forming an open head drum, a thermoplastic chime is initially welded in similar fashion to the upper end of the tube.

  • Patent number: 4169326
Abstract: A drum is provided with an identification tag secured to the top chime construction. A wire loop having the tag at its free end is in frictional engagement at its other end between the top chime strip and the underlying associated material of the drum wall. This arrangement is accomplished by properly twisting the wire loop, placing it over the top of the drum wall so that it projects downwardly on both the interior and exterior walls. The top chime is placed on the top of the drum wall with the wire loop interposed therebetween. The beading operation is then completed following which the identification tag is secured to the top chime construction of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4136796
Abstract: A closure is provided for a container opening. The opening is defined by a neck extending outwardly from the top of the container. The closure includes a liner cap disposed both interiorly and exteriorly of the neck and defines a central passage. A plug extends across the top of the cap to close off the passage from the exterior. The plug is provided with at least one longitudinal hole. The lower end of the plug has attached thereto a membrane extending across the passage. This membrane does not permit liquids within the container to pass therethrough, but possesses the property of being capable of venting gasses therethrough. A dust cap may extend across the top of the closure during shipment and storage.

  • Patent number: 4134609
Abstract: The disclosure is of a closing ring assembly for sealing the cover of a drum type of container. The assembly comprises a split ring, the ends of which are connected by a bolt secured through a pair of bolt clips mounted on the ends of the split ring. The bolt clips comprise tubular members having flared open ends. The clips are positioned in a specific manner to receive the bolt component without interfering with rolling of the drum. In a preferred embodiment, the bolt clips include a threaded retainer member to cooperate with a threaded bolt. The assembly of the invention is advantageous in that it is more economical to manufacture, more secure in use, easier to operate and stronger than prior art closing ring assemblies.

  • Patent number: 4101156
Abstract: A clamping ring for securing a removable cover on a drum is provided with a closing device having a lever and a latch. The lever is pivotal in a plane parallel to that of the clamping ring from an outwardly extending open position inwardly to contract the ring into a closed position. The latch is pivoted downwardly until its latch finger extends through a slot in the lever finger to place the clamping ring in a sealed position. This sealed position is accomplished by means of a primary lock caused by the interengagement of a hook-tang on the latch finger and bottom surfaces of the lever finger adjacent the slot. A secondary lock is formed by the interengagement of an inwardly projecting tang on the latch finger which also engages with surfaces of the lever finger adjacent the slot.

  • Patent number: 4033454
Abstract: A method and structure is provided for retaining one or more drums on a pallet. The drum structure is normally in closure sealing the bottom end of the tubular body and either a cover or a closure for the top end of the body. The drum is provided with confining structure on at least one of the upper and lower ends which is adapted to capture a strap for securing the drum to the pallet. The confining structure is such that it facilitates the strapping of each drum of a plurality arranged in a group to a single pallet while capturing the straps and preventing slippage thereof from the drums. The confining structure can be in the form of protuberances or indentations and, in the case of the sealed drum, would be formed in at least the top seam of the drum and, in the case of a drum with a removable cover, can be formed in the clamping ring used to hold the cover on the drum.

  • Patent number: 3955705
Abstract: An improved drum is provided comprising an elongated tubular body member formed of a plastic material. The drum further includes plastic top and bottom closures secured to opposite ends of the body member and including portions which extend respectively over the top and bottom ends of the body member. Metal chimes encircle the interfaces of both the top and bottom closures with the body member and secure the closures to the body member. Each chime is spirally wound inwardly about the interface through at least 360.degree. of arc. An accordion-like member extends between the body member and bottom to allow for greater flexibility. The top and bottom closures are designed to enable stacking of the drum on another drum of similar construction.

  • Patent number: 3949877
Abstract: A nestable drum is provided with a tubular shell having a lower section and a top section of increased diameter joined by an integral step located approximately at the shell middle. The larger diameter top section is adapted to conveniently receive the reduced bottom section to facilitate nesting when drums are stacked one upon the other. The step is formed with a series of spaced reinforcing gussets which are adapted to rest on the top end of a lower drum in the stack. The top of the shell is necked-in and possesses a diameter less than that of the top section and is curled outwardly to provide a bead which receives a cover locked in place by a split clamping ring. One form of cover is provided with an indentation which is adapted to receive the bottom closure of a stacked drum to lock it in place and thereby prevent any relative sliding.
