Patent number: 9242454Abstract: A method of inking a substrate in a printing press is provided. The printing press includes a plurality of printing units, each printing unit includes a blanket cylinder, a plate cylinder and an inker. The method includes the steps of running the plate cylinder, blanket cylinder and inker at a press speed, driving the inker independently, printing on a substrate with a desired ink film thickness at the press speed and stopping the press for a press stop event. Stopping the press further includes stopping the inker at a maximum stop rate, stopping the plate cylinder and blanket cylinder at a normal stop rate and moving the plate cylinder and blanket cylinder into an off impression position.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2014Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: GROSS INTERNATIONAL AMERICAS, INC.Inventors: Michael Raymond Rancourt, Howard W. Hoff, Brian Robert Elkinson, William J. Derocher

Publication number: 20110179962Abstract: A method of operating a web printing press is provided. The method includes storing productivity data, press speeds and paper types of past print jobs run on the web printing press in a database; comparing a paper type of a new print job with the paper types of the past print jobs stored in the database to identify past print jobs with similar or the same paper type as the new print job; selecting a press speed for the new print job based on at least the productivity data of the past print jobs with similar or the same paper type as the new print job; and printing the new print job on the web printing press at the selected press speed.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 27, 2010Publication date: July 28, 2011Applicant: Gross International Americas, Inc.Inventor: Michael Raymond Rancourt

Publication number: 20070158903Abstract: In a first exemplary embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus for decelerating a signature comprises a movable belt arrangement, and a motor coupled to the movable belt arrangement for controllably moving the movable belt arrangement through a cyclical velocity profile. Pursuant to a feature of the present invention, the movable belt arrangement is moved through a signature engaging section with the cyclical velocity profile causing the motor to decelerate the movable belt arrangement from a first speed to a second speed while engaging a signature in the signature engaging section. The signature enters the signature engaging section at the first speed, and leaves the signature engaging section at the second speed, lower than the first speed. The cyclical velocity profile causes the movable belt arrangement to accelerate upon the signature leaving the signature engaging section, back to the first speed, prior to a next signature entering the signature engaging section.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 10, 2006Publication date: July 12, 2007Applicant: Gross International Americas, Inc.Inventors: Kevin Cote, Lothar Schroeder, Joseph St.Ours

Publication number: 20070144321Abstract: An infeed apparatus for a sheet material article trimmer includes a pusher element for moving a sheet material article to be trimmed on a front table of the trimmer and into engagement with a backstop of the front table. The pusher element is moved by a driver which moves the pusher element at the same speed as the front table for a period of time with the pusher element in engagement with a back edge portion of the sheet material article and the backstop in engagement with a front edge portion of the sheet material article. The period of time is at least as long as the time required for a front clamp of the sheet material article trimmer to grip the sheet material article against the front table. A method is also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 20, 2007Publication date: June 28, 2007Applicant: Gross International Americas, Inc.Inventors: Kevin Cote, Richard Curley, Benedict Raffaele
