    Abstract: A method for detecting estrus in sows where insemination is carried out when a determination has been made. In a first method images of a rear profile of each sow are analyzed to make a determination from features relating to a shape, size, and/or color of the vulva whether the sow is in estrus. The analysis can use a program where a large number of images showing the vulva area of a plurality of sows known to be in estrus and known not to be in estrus have been previously analyzed to generate data on the previous images to create a program which generates a signal using the data to make the determination. In a second method a boar is confined and brought into close contact with the sows where images and/or sounds of each sow are analyzed to make a determination whether the sow is in estrus.

    Abstract: An apparatus for raising livestock includes one or more confinement pens together with alleyways for transfer of the animals from one location to another. The apparatus includes one or more cameras for obtaining images of all animals in the containment area. A processor is provided for analyzing the images, the processor being arranged to allocate an arbitrary identification to each animal and to track all animals continually to maintain the allocation. From this tracking various data related to individual animals or the animals as a group can be obtained to assess their characteristics and to provide an indication to the worker of the animal to be extracted. The processor can be arranged to detect by image analysis of the image a quantity of feed and/or water in a feeder and to obtain images of the farrowing pen including the sow confinement area and at least one piglet confinement area.

A damper flap is mounted on the fan suspended by a hinge at an upper edge so as to extend in a closed position across the opening and is movable to an open position under forward air flow from the fan, and tightly closes against a resilient deformable seal when the fan is shut off. A spring biasing cam applies inwards force to the damper flap to bias the damper flap into the closed position, and an outwards force also to bias the damper flap into the fully open position. The mounting plate includes a hood having a top wall extending over the top of the damper flap and a down-turned front flange extending parallel to the damper flap to a bottom edge.
