  • Publication number: 20120172877
Abstract: A surgical instrument includes distal and proximal tube sections and a coupling that couples the distal tube section to the proximal tube section. The coupling includes first and second connector portions coupled to one of the distal tube section and the proximal tube section. The first and second connector portions are selectively engageable and disengageable with respect to each other and each include selectively engageable fixing members. The distal and proximal tube sections are rotationally fixed to each other when the fixing members of the second connector portion are engaged with the fixing members of the first connector portion. The distal and proximal tube sections can rotate relative to each other when the fixing members of the second connector portion are disengaged from the fixing members of the first connector portion.

  • Patent number: 8192489
Abstract: A system for adjusting an adjustable ossicular prosthesis including an ossicular implant and an adjusting device is provided. The ossicular implant includes a first fixation element, an elongated member extending from the first fixation element with a plurality of notches, a receiving member receiving a portion of the elongated member, and a resilient arm coupled to the elongated member. The resilient arm has a locked position fixing the receiving member relative to the elongated member and the length of the implant, and an unlocked position. The adjusting device includes first and second arms having first and second sets of jaws coupled thereto, the first and second sets of jaws configured to selectively engage the implant, the second set of jaws being configured to position the resilient arm in the unlocked position when engaging the receiving member of the implant, and an adjustment mechanism to adjust the length of the implant.

  • Publication number: 20120109130
Abstract: A surgical tool can include a main unit and a first rigid sheath. The main unit includes an inner tube that is received within an outer tube. The first rigid sheath removably receives the main unit and connects to the main unit via a coupling between a first connector portion of the main unit and a second connector portion of the rigid sheath. The first rigid sheath can be completely removed from the main unit when the first connector portion is decoupled from the second connector portion. A different rigid sheath having a different shape from the shape of the first rigid sheath can then be removably attached to the main unit instead of the first rigid sheath. A surgical tool kit includes a plurality of rigid sheaths having different shapes and having the ability to be removably attached to the main unit.

  • Patent number: 7998159
Abstract: A cutting accessory for use with a powered surgical tool includes an elongated outer tube with an outer hub attached to the proximal end for releasably securing the cutting accessory within the powered tool. An elongated inner member is received within the outer tube and has an inner hub adapted to be driven by the surgical tool. The dimensions of the outer tube and inner member are such as to form an annular channel therebetween for the passage of irrigating fluid. The inner member carries a cutting tool, such as a burr, at its distal end, the tool being accessible through an aperture in the outer tube. A bearing member is located in the annular channel between the inner member and the outer tube, and a bypass channel runs external to the outer tube to carry irrigating fluid to the cutting tool bypassing the bearing member. An aperture through the outer tube connects the annular channel with the bypass channel.

Abstract: A biocompatible middle ear prosthesis includes a polymer and a radiopaque marking material. The biocompatible middle ear prosthesis is implanted in the middle ear to replace all or part of the middle ear ossicles. A method for detecting the location of biocompatible middle ear prosthesis including implanting at least one biocompatible middle ear prosthesis that includes a polymer and a radiopaque marking material into the middle ear, exposing the at least one biocompatible middle ear prosthesis to a radiation source, creating an image from the exposure of the biocompatible middle ear prosthesis to a radiation source, and viewing the image created from the exposure of the biocompatible middle ear prosthesis to a radiation source to determine the location of the biocompatible middle ear prosthesis in the middle ear.

  • Patent number: 7854736
Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises a hollow tube (18) having a cutting window (16) at the distal end portion. An inner tube (15) is disposed within the tube (18) and is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis. A cutting tool (17) is located at the distal end of the tube (15), and is positioned adjacent to the cutting window (16). An outer tube (14) is provided over the tube (18). A motor (5) is provided for rotating the inner tube (15), and saline is fed to the cutting window (16) via a passageway (25) between the tubes (15) and (18). The inner tube (15) has a central lumen (24) through which tissue cut by the cutting tool (17) is removed under the action of a source of suction (12). The outer surface of the tube 18 is covered with an electrically insulating layer (22) and coagulating RF signals are supplied between the tube (18) and the outer tube (14) so as to coagulate tissue at the cutting window (16).
