Publication number: 20090046196Abstract: Methods and systems for adjusting a video imaging system that includes an auto-focus mechanism wherein an input from a user of the video imaging system invokes an auto-focus procedure. Responsive to the input, the auto-focus mechanism is scanned over a range of focal distance from a first setting to a second setting indicated by the input. A sequence of images using the video imaging system is captured while scanning the auto-focus mechanism over the range. The images in the sequence are processed so as to compute a measure of focal quality with respect to each of the images. The measure of the focal quality is analyzed so as to select an optimal focal distance, and the auto-focus mechanism is set to the selected focal distance.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2008Publication date: February 19, 2009Applicant: GYRUS GROUP PLCInventors: Michael Lavrentiev, Stuart Wolf, Doron Adler, Albert M. Publication number: 20080132893Abstract: An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical instrument and a user alert means (78). The electrosurgical instrument includes an elongate body (1) having a proximal end (2) and a distal end (3), and a pair of jaws (12) carried by the elongate body and disposed at the distal end. An actuator mechanism (5) at the proximal end of the elongate body (1) is movable by the user of the instrument to open and close the jaws (12). The instrument includes first and second electrodes (13), (14) carried by the jaws (12), and at least one strain gauge (75) adapted to provide a signal representative of the closure force applied by the jaws (12). The strain gauge (75) sends signals to the user alert means (78), the user alert means supplying the user of the instrument with an indication (82) of the closure force being applied by the instrument.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 8, 2007Publication date: June 5, 2008Applicant: Gyrus Group plcInventors: Frank D'Amelio, Andrew John Ford

Patent number: 7211084Abstract: An electrosurgical cutting blade (1) comprises a first electrode (2), a second electrode (3), and an electrical insulator (4) separating the first and second electrodes. The first and second electrodes have dissimilar characteristics (cross-sectional area, thermal conductivity etc.) such that the first electrode (2) is encouraged to become an active electrode and the second electrode (3) is encouraged to become a return electrode. The spacing between the first and second electrodes (between 0.25 mm and 3.0 mm) and the peak voltage supplied to the electrodes (2 and 3) are both selected such that arcing does not occur directly between the electrodes, but between the first electrode and the tissue at the target site. The arrangement is such that, in use, a thermal differential of at least 50° C. is established between the first and second electrodes (2 and 3), such that the second electrode is maintained below a temperature of 70° C.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2005Date of Patent: May 1, 2007Assignee: Gyrus Group PLCInventors: Colin Charles Owen Goble, Kester J. Patent number: 7147637Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for cutting and sealing tissue comprises first and second jaw members movable between open and closed positions so as to be capable of grasping tissue therebetween. The first jaw member includes first and second coagulating electrodes on its inner surface, and an insulating member separating the first and second electrodes. The first jaw member also includes a third cutting electrode on an outer surface separate from the inner surface, and the second jaw member has a tissue-contacting surface which is electrically insulating over its entire surface. The electrosurgical instrument is capable of selectively causing coagulation of tissue between the first and second electrodes, and/or the cutting of tissue contacted by the third electrode.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2004Date of Patent: December 12, 2006Assignee: Gyrus Group plcInventor: Coliin C. The first and second electrode have dissimilar characteristics, such that the first electrode is encouraged to become an active electrode and the second electrode is encouraged to become a return electrode. In use, a thermal differential is established between the first and second electrodes, either by thermally insulating the second electrode from the first electrode, and/or by transferring heat away from the second electrode.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 14, 2006Publication date: November 23, 2006Applicant: Gyrus Group PLCInventors: Colin Goble, Kester Batchelor, Mark Marshall
