Abstract: A starting/generating system includes a rotor portion and a stator portion. The stator portion is connected to a DC power source during starting operations and to a DC load during generating operations, and includes a DC link having a first and second DC link bus, a DC link capacitor connected between the DC link buses, and an inverter/rectifier that converts AC power to DC power and vice versa. A switching device is connected in series on the first DC link bus and is controlled by a controller that turns the switching device On and Off to provide various functionality to the starting/generating system.
Abstract: A gas turbine starting architecture is used to start a gas turbine engine having at least a first spool. The architecture includes an electric power distribution bus, a motor, a compressor, a pneumatic distribution circuit, an air turbine starter, and a first tower shaft. The motor converts electric power provided by the electric power distribution bus to mechanical power. In turn, the mechanical power provided by the motor is converted to pneumatic power by the compressor for provision to a pneumatic distribution circuit. The air turbine starter converts pneumatic power from the pneumatic distribution circuit to mechanical power is provided via the first tower shaft to the at least one spool on the gas turbine engine.
Abstract: A solid-state power regulator (SSPR) regulates power delivered to a frequency tolerant load from a wild-source generator. The SSPR includes a solid-state switching device and a controller. The solid-state switching device is turned On to deliver power from the wild-source generator to the frequency-tolerant load and Off to prevent the delivery of power to the frequency-tolerant load. The controller monitors the power delivered to the frequency-tolerant load and selectively modulates the solid-state switching device to regulate the power delivered.

Abstract: A method of operating a WFSM in a motoring mode determines a relative position of a PMG rotor with respect to the WFSM rotor. A PMG is coupled to the WFSM via a coupling shaft. A relative difference between the WFSM rotor position and the PMG rotor position is determined based on carrier injection sensorless (“CIS”) stimulation signals. The relative difference between the PMG rotor and the WFSM main machine in conjunction with the PMG rotor position is used to determine the WFSM rotor position during motoring operation of the main machine. A stator of the WFSM main machine is energized to maintain operation of the WFSM in response to the detected main rotor position.
