  • Patent number: 6569007
Abstract: A fume hood includes a top, bottom sidewalls, front panel and a back panel that define an enclosed workspace. The fume hood also includes a movable sash for opening and closing an access opening. The fume hood also includes an air chamber having an inlet in the front panel. The air chamber includes a baffle system that evenly distributes the inlet air as the air travels through the air chamber. An unimpeded flow of air is discharged downward and away from the breathing zone of the technician and proximate to the sash to reduce the forward momentum of air trying to escape the fume hood. In an alternate embodiment, the fume hood also includes a pressure pipe for drawing a small quantity of air from the air chamber and directing a flow of air between the movable sash and the header panel. This flow of air from the pressure pipe increases the relative pressure difference between the movable sash and the header panel of the fume hood.

  • Patent number: 6550703
Abstract: A cutter for use in a blender includes a central hub portion defining a horizontal plane. First and second pairs of blades extend outwardly from the hub portion. The first pair of blades is oriented on opposite sides of the hub portion and the blades lie in substantially the same horizontal plane as the hub portion. The second pair of blades is oriented on opposite sides of the hub portion and the blades extend upwardly from the horizontal plane of the hub portion, and further wherein the angles of upward extension of each of the second pair of blades is asymmetric. Further, each blade of the first set of blades has a cutting edge and trailing edge, and each blade of the first set of blades is pitched so that there is a downward slope from the cutting edge to the trailing edge.

  • Publication number: 20030070544
Abstract: A system and method for determining the condition of a filter in a forced air filtration system includes a blower motor and a fan mounted for rotation with an output shaft of the blower motor. A load sensor is operably connected to the blower motor for monitoring an electric load of the motor. As the filter becomes increasingly laden with airborne particles, the electric load changes. The load sensor generates a load value dependent on the electric load of the motor which is compared to a predetermined value. When the load value reaches the predetermined value, a signal is generated indicative of a filter change condition.

  • Patent number: 6547862
Abstract: A rotary phase separator includes an accumulator and a liquid outlet valve to separate the phases of a liquid/gas mixture. The separator includes a housing defining a radial accumulator chamber and supporting a shaft, and a motor to drive the shaft for rotation about a longitudinal axis. A plurality of disks and cylinders are attached to the shaft to create frictional contact with the mixture to drive the liquid outward against an inner wall of the separator, thereby displacing the gas to a central region about the shaft. A liquid outlet on the inner wall includes a valve seal held closed by a control springs until a predetermined differential pressure is reached. The gas exits through an opening in the hollow shaft to a gas outlet tube. A valve member actuated by a solenoid seals the gas outlet tube until sufficient gas has accumulated to allow separation.

  • Patent number: 6537027
Abstract: A starter is provided including a housing defining a fluid passageway with an inlet and an outlet. A turbine rotor is supported in the housing and includes blades arranged in the passageway between the inlet and the outlet. The rotor is movable within the passageway at a speed with a fluid exiting the blade toward the outlet. A spoiler is arranged in the passageway between the rotor and the outlet. The spoiler deflects the fluid exiting the blade and reduces the rotor speed. Preferably, the present invention spoiler is utilized to reduce the maximum speed at the no-load condition. The angle, number, position, and other characteristics of the spoiler may be tailored for the particular turbine and a particular speed for which it is desirable to reduce.
