Patent number: 7761871Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for remotely accessing data through a wireless device are disclosed. Preferably, the wireless device includes an ability to link data between software components operating on the wireless device. Additionally, the wireless device preferably includes an ability to reduce remote data access by identifying a first data type and a second data type used by a software component, retrieving data corresponding to the first data type from a service provider, retrieving data corresponding to the second data type from the portable device, and displaying on the portable device a return content result including both the first data type and the second data type.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2005Date of Patent: July 20, 2010Assignee: Handmark, Inc.Inventors: James D. Edwards, Timothy B. Massay, Cassidy L. Lackey, Steve N. McGuigan, Ronald D. Patton, Robert West, Benjamin Gottlieb, Samuel P. Chipman, Aaron D. Summa

Patent number: 7743344Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for optimizing the use of client capacity when providing information contents to a user. First, two modes of navigation of the client are defined: a first, continuous navigation mode, characterized by restricted movement among the contents, and a second, discontinuous mode, characterized by unrestricted movement among the contents. Then it is determined which mode of navigation the user is currently using, and the utilization of client capacity is adapted based on the currently used mode of navigation. In the first mode of navigation, user action can be more easily anticipated, and the client capacity can be used for improving the ongoing media consumption. In the second mode of navigation, user action is more difficult to predict, and client capacity may be needed for handling unexpected actions.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2002Date of Patent: June 22, 2010Assignee: Handmark, Inc.Inventors: Konstantin Zervas, Tomas Aronsson

Patent number: 7613792Abstract: A method for caching media content on a client includes organizing media subjects in a predefined media package structure, and downloading the structure to the client in order for a user to consume the subjects in the structure. The media structure is arranged to allow a user to request media subjects by navigating from a current subject to adjacent subjects in the structure, and these adjacent subjects are cached at the client in advance, before the user requests them. By downloading the adjacent media subjects, the user will get the impression that the entire media structure is cached, and will not experience any download delays.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2001Date of Patent: November 3, 2009Assignee: Handmark, Inc.Inventors: Konstantin Zervas, Tomas Aronsson

Patent number: 7424708Abstract: Example embodiments relate to a method for providing media content to a user over a digital network, which media content may be provided by a media content server, organized and selected by an intermediate node in accordance to previously stored user preferences, and delivered to a client operated by the user. The method may define a personalized media package structure, communicate a first package having the personalized media package structure to the client, receive status information from the client, the status information describing a user action, adapt the personalized media package structure in response to the user action, and communicate a second package having the adapted personalized media package structure to the client. With such arrangement, the user may experience a highly personalized media playback, with a minimum of cost related to network transmission.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2008Assignee: Handmark, Inc.Inventors: Per Johan Andersson, Magnus Carlsson, Carlo Pompili, Konstantin Zervas
