Patent number: 5306183Abstract: A propulsion system for a submarine vessel includes a thruster including a magnetic flux generating stator, a shaftless propellant rotor, electrical conductors to supply electrical current to the thruster, an electronic controller to regulate such electrical current and a mounting unit to attach the thruster to the vessel. The stator includes a plurality of magnetizable pole pieces each associated with windings of conductive wires electrically connected to a power supply via the controller. The rotor includes a propeller ring containing a plurality of permanent magnets to be torqued by the magnetic flux from the stator pole pieces and a plurality of propeller blades. The rotation of the rotor (armature) provides position signals to the controller which then energizes the proper field windings of the stator to continue the motion and provide full torque regardless of rotor speed.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1993Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignee: Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Inc.Inventors: John K. Patent number: 4948258Abstract: Range and/or profile of a test surface, particularly a submarine surface, are determined by passing a laser beam through a holographic grating structured to emit a divergent light beam defining a two dimensional array of dots in a predetermined pattern and projecting such beam on the test surface. A receiving device, e.g., video camera, ascertains the positions of the dots in the pattern reflected from the test surface and comparison is made of such positions relative to the positions of the respective dots previously reflected in like manner from a datum surface. The values of the displacements of test surface dots from datum surface dots are used to determine the range or orientation of the test surface relative to the grating or the profile of the test surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1988Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Inc.Inventor: Frank M. Patent number: 4731377Abstract: This invention relates to cyclic peroxide compositions, a process of producing the compositioning and a method for inhibiting tumors utilizing the compositions. More particularly, the compositions are cyclic peroxides which are derived from marine organisms, i.e., the marine sponge Plakortis lita.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1986Date of Patent: March 15, 1988Assignee: Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Inc.Inventors: Tatsuo Higa, Carsten Christophersen, Shinichi Sakemi

Patent number: 4680513Abstract: A control device for a reversible D.C. electric motor to protect it against damage upon reversal has a input switch circuit for reversing the flow of current through the motor's armature for reversing the direction of rotation of the motor, a first control circuit for preventing flow of current via the input switch circuit to the armature initially upon current reversing and a second control circuit for periodically interrupting the flow of current while the motor gains rotational speed after being reversed in relation to the magnitude of the flow of current through the armature. The first control circuit includes a detector circuit for determining the voltage drop existing across the armature and an automatic switch unit for (1) blocking flow of current from the input switch means to the armature until the voltage drop is determined by the detector circuit to be in a predetermined range and (2) allowing flow of the current while the voltage drop is determined to be within the range.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1986Date of Patent: July 14, 1987Assignee: Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Inc.Inventor: Gregory C. Patent number: 4676097Abstract: Rotary type knotmeters designed to detect relative motion between an underwater vehicle and the water in which it is submersed at relatively great depths comprise a vaned rotor external unit, an electronic counter/display internal unit, a multiplexing transmission line connecting the external unit to the internal unit and, preferably, a brake unit to stop rotation of the rotor unit when the knotmeter is not immersed in water. The external unit comprises a plurality of spaced Hall-effect magnetic sensors that function with bi-phase electronic detectors to modulate current flowing in the transmission line to power the external unit. Such detectors count the number of rotations per unit time of the vaned rotor which is proportional to the relative motion between vehicle and water. The current is demodulated in the internal unit to produce a velocity value which is then displayed as a digital speed reading.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1985Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Inc.Inventor: Robert F.
