  • Patent number: 4529483
Abstract: A process for utilizing waste heat and producing water gas during cooling of red-hot coke, in two stages, is indicated. In a first, dry cooling stage, a mixture of water gas and steam passes the coke charge, is recooled in a heat sink and recirculated into the first cooling stage, whereby it is possible to take off a part quantity of the gas mixture. In a second, wet cooling stage, water is fed into a quench zone and the steam formed is passed through the coke charge partially into the first cooling stage and partially released into the surroundings or fed back into the second cooling stage or partly released into the surroundings and partly fed back into the second cooling stage. Both the mixture of water gas and steam in the first cooling stage and the quench water or the steam formed from it in the second cooling stage are passed through the coke charge from the inside outwards.

  • Patent number: 4439274
Abstract: The emission of solid particles during the discharging of a horizontal coking oven or furnace is substantially reduced or eliminated. For this purpose the hot air and gas convection flow which carries the solid particles substantially vertically upwardly is exposed to a shower or spray of water drops which are directed substantially horizontally into the upward convection flow. The volume, surface tension, density and speed of the water drops are coordinated relative to one another so that the water drops are loaded by taking up the solid particles whereupon the loaded drops sink down in a countercurrent flow to the upward convection flow. The solid particles carrying the water drops are removed from the convection flow by a plurality of baffles arranged in a chimney or stack in a staggered relationship so that the upward convection flow can pass through between adjacent baffles which are inclined toward respective collecting channels.

  • Patent number: 4437936
Abstract: A process for utilizing waste heat and for obtaining water gas during the cooling of incandescent coke ejected from a chamber oven is described, this process being in two stages. In the first stage, the coke is dry-cooled with a mixture of water gas and water vapor as the cooling gas. This is circulated, and from the circuit the desired waste heat and the desired water gas are extracted. In the second stage, the coke is wet-cooled with water. The water vapor formed is taken off and returned to the environment and/or to the second stage.

  • Patent number: 4358343
Abstract: Preheated bulk material capable of coking is quenched by flowing the quenching liquid through the loose bulk material, whereby the bulk material is substantially closed off relative to the atmosphere. The liquid is applied to the top of the bulk material in a quenching chamber which is closed at its top by a sealed cover and which has an open grating for a horizontal bottom. The steam formed by the quenching liquid and, if formed, any excess quenching liquid are drawn off from the quenching chamber through the open grating. The total quantity of quenching liquid to be supplied as a function of time is controlled by a valve through a control signal depending on the chemical and physical properties constituting bulk material characteristics prior to the heating of the coal. The control signal also takes into account the type of the intended heat treatment in the form of quenching characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4273617
Abstract: Heated bulk material, such as coke, is quenched by a liquid flowing from the top downwardly through the bulk material. During the quenching the bulk material is closed off from the atmosphere. The steam forming from the quenching liquid is carried off downwardly in parallel flow with the quenching liquid. For this purpose the amount of quenching liquid distributed over the bulk material is so measured or dosed that it participates completely in the quenching process, whereby the quenching liquid evaporates completely except for a specific residual moisture in the coke. The flow resistance which varies over the base surface of the bulk material is compensated by a carry-off resistance which is inversely proportional to the respective bulk material height. The varying of the flow resistance is due to a bulk material height which changes from one side of the quenching container to the opposite side as a result of an inclined container bottom.

  • Patent number: 4198275
Abstract: A locomotive is provided to move a quench car and a gas transition car parallel to a battery of coke ovens adjacent a coke guide car. A pivotable hood is provided on the guide car for covering part of the charging opening of the quench car. The quench car has generally parallel, pivotal flaps which can operate independently to open a portion of the quench car charge opening beneath the hood as coke is pushed from the guide and through the hood into the car. The flaps on either side of the hood can be held closed to seal the charge opening and prevent escape of the dirty gases out of the quench car. An extraction duct connects the quench car to the gas transition car cooperably connected with a gas collection duct which also runs parallel to the coke ovens and which has an opening running its length.

  • Patent number: 4066175
Abstract: A filling system operating with an apparatus for loading coal into the charging hole of a coke oven has an upper feed tube, an intermediate feed tube, and a lower tube. The upper tube is connected to the apparatus and is adapted to receive coal from it. The intermediate upright tube is vertically telescopable on the upper tube and has a lower end, with a bellows-type cuff interconnecting the upper and intermediate tubes to prevent leakage from therebetween.
