Patent number: 6003780Abstract: An improved freezeproof or freeze resistant valve assembly is provided for use in an outdoor drinking fountain or the like. The fountain includes a main on-off valve for coupling an underground water supply conduit via a standpipe to a fountain head to dispense water. The freezeproof assembly comprises a sump chamber installed below the frost line and having a piston mounted therein for reciprocal movement between advanced and retracted positions. When the main valve is turned off, the piston retracts by gravity within the sump chamber and residual water remaining within the standpipe drains to the sump chamber at low pressure through a normally open control valve mounted on the piston. When the main valve is turned on, the control valve is closed by water pressure and the piston is advanced within the sump chamber to expel the water previously collected therein through a discharge conduit coupled to a main fountain drain.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1998Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: Haws Company, A Nevada CorporationInventors: Albert G. Patent number: 5754990Abstract: An emergency wash station is provided for flushing irritants from the eyes and face of an individual, particularly such as person working in a laboratory or industrial environment. The wash station comprises a basin with a pair of upstanding flow risers disposed therein and having spray heads at their upper ends. An actuator valve is adapted for movement to an open position to supply water for flow upwardly through the flow risers and spray heads. The flow risers each include a flow conduit leading to the associated spray head, in combination with at least one blind-end passage, to achieve more rapid initial delivery of water to the spray heads when the actuator valve is opened.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1996Date of Patent: May 26, 1998Assignee: Haws CompanyInventor: Albert G. Patent number: 5740569Abstract: An emergency eyewash unit is provided for installation on a counter top adjacent to a sink, and includes a pair of spray heads mounted on a common swing arm for movement between a stored position alongside the sink and an active position with the spray heads disposed over the sink. The swing arm is mounted to the counter top by a control valve assembly which opens as the swing arm is moved to the active position to connect the spray heads to a water supply. The eyewash unit includes an adjustable cam mechanism with a set screw which cooperates with a selected one of a pair of cam tracks formed on the control valve to define a limited range of swing arm travel between the stored and active positions, wherein the set screw is quickly and easily mounted within a selected on of a pair of threaded ports to accommodate mounting of the eyewash unit on the left or right sides of the sink.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1997Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Assignee: Haws CompanyInventors: Albert G. Patent number: 5350112Abstract: A tempered water mixing system for applications such as emergency drench shower and eyewash stations, wherein the mixing system includes back-up control valves to ensure a substantial water flow without risk of user scalding in the event of malfunction of a main thermostatic mixing valve. The main mixing valve thermostatically blends cold and hot water supplies to provide a tempered discharge outflow at a selected temperature. A temperature limit control valve detects the discharge outflow temperature and responds to an excess temperature condition to modulate hot water flow in a manner reducing discharge temperature. A flow limit control valve detects the pressure differential between the discharge outflow and the cold water supply, and responds to a low flow condition represented by a high pressure differential to permit a make-up bypass flow of cold water past the main mixing valve.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1993Date of Patent: September 27, 1994Assignee: Haw CompanyInventor: Matthew I. Patent number: 5008963Abstract: An improved emergency wash station is provided for flushing irritants from the eyes or face of an individual, particularly such as a person working in an industrial or laboratory environment. The wash station includes a spray manifold having a large plurality of spray ports disposed above the upper rim of a drain bowl, with the spray manifold being connected to a water supply via a single inlet fitting located externally of the drain bowl. A pressure control member at the inlet fitting insures a relatively gentle yet substantially full face flush spray throughout a range of water supply pressures. In addition, the spray ports are formed with an outwardly expanding taper to minimize clogging by ice or other debris.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1989Date of Patent: April 23, 1991Assignee: Haws CompanyInventor: Matthew I.
