Patent number: 6196854Abstract: The female part of an underwater electrical connector has inner and outer chambers containing non-conductive fluid. Each chamber has an opening sealed by a respective spring loaded ball in the unmated condition of the connector and by a contact pin of the male part in the mated condition of the connector. The balls are displaced transversely to the direction of movement of the contact pin to engage the contact socket and automatically re-seal the openings when the contact pin is withdrawn.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1999Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventor: Edward Hand

Patent number: 5691505Abstract: An electric cable termination gland has a continuity member formed by a metal sleeve which is located within the gland and has a middle region of reduced strength formed by a series of discrete bridge portions with a partially folded crease creating a central zone about which the bridge portions can fold inwardly when axial pressure is applied to the continuity member to cause the bridge portions to contact an exposed metal sheath of a cable extending through the gland.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1996Date of Patent: November 25, 1997Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventor: Trevor William Norris

Patent number: 5648639Abstract: An insulation piercing earthing ring for a gland termination to provide earth continuity between an electrically conductive gland body and an electrically conductive inner sleeve of an insulated cable or pipe has a flat annular washer for locating against the end of the cable or pipe with at least one contact finger extending from the periphery of the washer to surround the cable or pipe and terminating in an inwardly directed projection for piercing the insulation. The contact finger extends axially and radially outwards from the periphery of the washer in the undeformed free state and is deformed radially inwards by engagement with a tapered entry portion of the gland body causing the projection to pierce the insulation and contact the electrically conductive inner sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1995Date of Patent: July 15, 1997Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventor: Edward Hand

Patent number: 5621191Abstract: A hollow first gland part has a counterbore at one end to receive an end portion of a hollow second gland part that is axially located relative to the first gland part. A seal assembly is connected to the end portion of the second gland part for sealing engagement with a cable extending through the first and second gland parts. The seal assembly includes a diaphragm extending inwardly from an outer sleeve mounted on the end portion of the second gland part and an annular backplate for supporting the diaphragm. The diaphragm and backplate are both convergent away from the end portion of the second gland part so as to maintain sealing engagement of the diaphragm when a higher pressure exists on the side of the diaphragm remote from the end portion of the second gland part.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1994Date of Patent: April 15, 1997Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventors: Trevor W. Norris, Lee Shortman

Patent number: 5352850Abstract: A non-conductive plastics junction box for connecting at least two cables has an internal conductive continuity plate integral with a base of the box. The plate has a base panel with at least one lug arranged to extend outwardly and externally of the base to provide an earthing terminal to ground, and side panels arranged to overlie side walls of the base in which entry ports are formed to receive cable glands for the respective cables. The continuity plate is in electrical contact with the glands and provides a continuous earthing path from the cables to the earthing terminal(s).Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1992Date of Patent: October 4, 1994Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventor: Trevor W. Norris

Patent number: 5310963Abstract: An electric cable barrier gland in which hardenable filler compound for surrounding the conductor core of a cable extending through the gland is disposed within a barrier sleeve located in a gland body with any clearance gap therebetween closed by a seal member mounted on a cylindrical sleeve portion of the barrier sleeve between opposed abutment shoulders of the barrier sleeve and gland body.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1992Date of Patent: May 10, 1994Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventor: Richard Kennelly

Patent number: 4919372Abstract: The invention concerns a lead-through transit for cables 3 or pipes of the kind having a frame 1 of the opening 2 is filled by a series of modular resilient lead-through blocks 4 and blank blocks 5 arranged in rows separated by stayplates 6 with a compression and packer assembly 7 clamping and holding the blocks 4,5 and cables 3 in sealed engagement. The lead-through blocks 4 comprise two complementary half-blocks 40 that provide, when assembled together around a cable, a passageway 41 for the cable. Each half-block 40 has a series of axially spaced semi-annular lands 42 separated by recesses 43. The lands 42 provide axially spaced sealing faces for engagement with the cable while the recesses 43 enable resilient deformation of the block to accommodate variations in cable size. To assist in such resilient conformation of the half-blocks 40, it is preferred that the half-block has recesses 44 formed on the outer faces that are aligned with the lands 42.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1988Date of Patent: April 24, 1990Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventors: Michael Twist, Alan Platt

Patent number: 4630848Abstract: A releasable tube coupling comprises a body providing a housing in which an annular seal and clamping ring are located and secured by a retainer and, a releaser slidably supported by the retainer for limited axial movement relative to the housing. The seal is of generally Z-section having outer and inner flanges connected by an inclined web convergent towards the inside of the housing. The clamping ring is mounted into the seal and has a plurality of spaced apart radially inwardly directed inclined teeth which overlie the web on the inner face of the seal for engagement with the outer surface of a tube received within the housing to retain the tube in the housing. The teeth are displaced away from the tube to permit axial withdrawal the tube on inwards movement of the releaser which acts on the teeth through the seal web.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1985Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Assignee: Hawke Cable Glands LimitedInventors: Michael Twist, Paul Mundy
