  • Patent number: 5669947
Abstract: A substantially sealed modular air handling system that has a plurality of modules enclosing a plurality of air handling units. Each of the modules has generally parallelpiped shaped cabinetry having two opposed sides and opposed front and rear faces. The plurality of air handling units has a plurality of common components designed to seal and readily mate the modules to one another in a plurality of selected configurations, to provide ready access to the air handling units enclosed therein via the front and rear faces thereof and to present an external surface that is substantially free of protruding devices which may pose a safety hazard to personnel. A selected one of the common components is an access door latch, having a latch frame operably, fixedly coupled to the cabinetry, the latch frame having a first flush portion disposed flush with the external surface of the cabinetry.

  • Patent number: 5658373
Abstract: An air cleaning system for treating contaminated air from a mechanical industrial process containing a heterogenous multi-component mixed density fluid (e.g., mist, vapor and/or smoke) that addresses the cloud-like behavior of this contaminated air. The air cleaning system continuously captures a contaminated air volume emitted during operation of the mechanical industrial process and mixes that contaminated air volume with an ambient air volume in order to produce a mixed air volume having certain characteristic temperatures and air velocities. The characteristics of the mixed air volume are controlled such that the mixed air volume does not exhibit cloud-like behavior when transferred via a conduit structure to an air cleaning apparatus or the like.

  • Patent number: 5656049
Abstract: A substantially sealed modular air handling system includes a separator suspension system. The separator suspension system is utilized for sealingly suspending a separator unit within a cabinet of the modular air handling system. The separator suspension system includes opposed, side-mounted brackets operably coupled to the separator unit to define at least a portion of a sealing gasket channel. A sealing gasket is disposed within the sealing gasket channel portion. A cooperative translatable support bracket is included for cooperating with the separator unit side-mounted brackets to support the separator unit, the translatable support bracket being operably coupled to the cabinetry of the modular air handling system and having an upwardly directed support surface for selectively supportingly engaging the support face of the separator unit side-mounted brackets.

  • Patent number: 5651803
Abstract: A modular air-handling system includes a number of air-handling modules joined together in a desired configuration. The modules house air-handling units, such as a fan-and-motor unit, a helical filter unit, and/or a Hepa filter unit. Sealing devices for sealing the air-handling modules include a sealing gasket, and the sealing gaskets preferably are of a common shape. Each sealing gasket includes a retention tab. A gasket channel of each sealing device is constructed to compress and retain the sealing gasket. The gasket channel includes a gasket retainer extending along the sealing gasket, abutting the retention tab. The gasket retainer engages and compresses the sealing gasket adjacent the retention tab, holding the sealing gasket within the gasket channel during assembly of the air-handling system. The gasket channel defines an open side during assembly of the air-handling system, at which open side the sealing gasket is exposed.

  • Patent number: 5641331
Abstract: A modular air-cleaning apparatus for the treatment of contaminated air. The apparatus includes a plurality of modular units cooperatively interconnected, wherein the plurality of units includes at least one separator unit functioning on non-collisional principles and at least one filtration unit functioning on collisional principles. Each modular unit is constructed of a durable and machinable material that is capable of withstanding harsh environmental conditions of use and is formed in a rectangular shape around four corner posts. Each post possesses at least one exposed, outwardly-facing surface with a side margin parallel to a long dimension of the post. The posts aid both in establishing and maintaining a mechanical connection between the unit and another of the modular units with which it is in operable connection, and in enhancing structural and mechanical characteristics of the unit.

  • Patent number: 5634845
Abstract: A method for sizing a source capture system for an air cleaning system involves a determination of the maximum dissipated heat energy of an industrial process based upon a horsepower output of any motors used by the process, and a determination of the characteristics and maximum coolant pressure of any liquid coolant and the maximum terminal velocity of the ambient air surrounding the source capture system if the source capture system is at least partially open to ambient air. Using these factors, a minimum air flow velocity of air entering the source capture system is established. This minimum air flow velocity is then used to determine an effective cross-sectional size of the opening of the source capture system based upon a given air velocity volume within the source capture system. By utilizing this method with a preferred embodiment of a structure for the source capture system, it is possible to optimize the size of the openings in the source capture system.

  • Patent number: 5622538
Abstract: A source capture system for capturing contaminated air from an industrial process includes structure both for continuously capturing a contaminated air volume emitted during operation of the industrial process and for mixing that contaminated air volume with an ambient air volume to produce a mixed air volume which is then transferred to an air clean apparatus or the like. The source capture system recognizes that air volumes will exhibit different characteristics traveling through an air treatment system, and that certain of those characteristics such as cloud-like formation and contaminated air volumes having significant gaseous phase vapor components are undesirable and operate to decrease the overall effectiveness of the air treatment system, regardless of what type of technology is used for the air cleaning apparatus.
