Patent number: 4067765Abstract: A film of an oleaginous substance is interposed between the surfaces of plastic elements to be joined by a thermal bond. The heat necessary for bonding is obtained by the incorporation of heat generating particles in the bond region, either in the plastic element or in the film. The particles are indirectly heatable by a high frequency alternating magnetic field or other suitable field. This provides a rapid and efficient heating of the surfaces to the bonding temperature, with the oleaginous substance enhancing the bonding action and the properties of the bond.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1976Date of Patent: January 10, 1978Assignee: William C. Heller, Jr.Inventors: William C. Heller, Jr., Alfred F. Leatherman

Patent number: 4035547Abstract: A technique for bonding plastic materials includes placement of minute particles at the interface, either between the interface surfaces or within one or both of the interface materials. A particle-moving field, such as an alternating magnetic field where magnetic particles are employed, is created across the interface to directly and correspondingly impress the alternating magnetic field on the magnetic particles while the interface is in a generally movable or yielding state. The alternating magnetic field continuously moves the particles and by proper orientation causes them to oscillate, rotate or otherwise move within the fluid interface material to move and intermix the plastic material and thereby produce an improved interface bond between the materials. The magnetic particles may be selected to also respond to a radio-frequency magnetic field to rapidly generate heat and thus simultaneously create the fluid material at the interface with the material agitation.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1975Date of Patent: July 12, 1977Assignee: William C. HellerInventors: William C. Heller, Jr., Alfred F. Leatherman

Patent number: 4029837Abstract: A stratified structure suitable for joining first and second thermally bondable bodies exhibiting bonding incompatibility. The structure includes a first layer having bonding compatibility with a first of the bodies, a second material layer having bonding compatibility with a second of the bodies and a metallic mesh interposed between the first and second layers for providing internal cohesion and integrity to the bonding agent. The metal mesh also provides a means by which the structure may be heated as by exposure to an alternating magnetic field. In bonding the first and second bodies, the composite bonding agent is positioned between the two bodies and exposed to the alternating magnetic field to effect heat seals between the bodies and the agent and thus between the two bodies.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1975Date of Patent: June 14, 1977Assignee: William C. Patent number: 4020880Abstract: The present apparatus provides for the automatic shaping and/or cutting of the leads of integrated circuit components which are intermittently advanced to and through a straightening and cutting portion of the apparatus. A base plate is disposed at an angle of approximately 40.degree. to the horizontal and provides a base for the gravitational feeding of integrated circuit components carried in plastic guides both before and after trimming. The untrimmed components are fed by gravity to a metering station whereat a rubber roller is intermittently rotated so that each component is brought in way of a pair of opposed processing blades. These blades are simultaneously advanced by eccentric means which are moved in strict timed relationship to the movement of the component in way of the processing blades. As cutoff blades they cooperate with a center guide die to provide the desired shearing action. Both blades and die may be sharpened several times without losing the desired registration.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1976Date of Patent: May 3, 1977Assignee: Martin G. HellerInventors: Martin G. Heller, Richard L. Cheney, Karl H. Kautzmann

Patent number: 4019758Abstract: An improved process of attaching a book body to a case at the hinge to form a hard bound book. A liquid thermoplastic bonding agent is applied to the body or case at the hinge area. The bonding agent is allowed to dry and form a solidified layer. The body is then inserted into the case so that the portion to which the agent has been applied is located at the hinge of the completed book. The dried bonding agent is heatable upon exposure to an alternating electric field and melts to form the attachment at the hinge area. Pressure applied to the hinge area assists in forming the attachment and reduces the thickness and heat generation of the layer.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1976Date of Patent: April 26, 1977Assignee: William C. Heller, Jr.Inventors: William C. Heller, Jr., Leonard Shatzkin
