Patent number: 5498967Abstract: A system and method for testing underground electric cables, while in service, for active corrosion and degree of neutral loss. The method is conducted by applying a non-harmonic selected frequency signal to the neutral(s) of the underground cable connecting a pair of structures, e.g., power transformers, from a variable frequency generator of the system. The test is conducted by a surveyor wearing foot electrodes which contact the earth as the surveyor walks along the earth over the cable in a close interval steps. At each step, direct current (DC) potentials are monitored by a voltmeter between a copper-copper sulfate electrode carried by the surveyor and brought into contact with the ground at each step and the transformer ground. The potential of the gradients between the foot electrodes at the selective frequency and at the native alternating current (AC) is also measured by the voltmeter. These measurements are recorded at a stationary location on a digital data logger and/or computer.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1995Date of Patent: March 12, 1996Assignee: Henkels & McCoy, Inc.Inventors: Craig D. Bass, Richard D. Valenti, Jr., Emer C. Flounders, Jr.

Patent number: 5141258Abstract: An expansion coupling and method of use for joining the ends of a pair of first and second conduits along a longitudinal axis. Each of the conduits is a tubular member of circular cross-section having an outside threaded leading end and an outside threaded trailing end. The coupling comprises an inner and outer sleeve. Both sleeves are elongated tubular members having a first end in the form of an internally threaded throat adapted to threadedly receive a respective threaded end of a respective conduit. The inner sleeve has a second end of a square outer periphery. The outer sleeve also has a second end of a square outer periphery. The second end of the inner sleeve is arranged for disposition within the second end of the outer sleeve to readily slide with respect thereto along the longitudinal axis, with the contiguous surfaces of the second ends of both sleeves preventing the rotation of the sleeves with respect to each other about the longitudinal axis.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1990Date of Patent: August 25, 1992Assignee: Henkels & McCoy, Inc.Inventor: Herman L. Stine

Patent number: 4844658Abstract: A sled device for burying a pipe within the ground under water. The sled is arranged to be pulled over the ground and includes a blade adjustably mounted within a tower in the sled. The blade is arranged to cut a furrow in the ground as the sled is pulled thereacross and to pull a pipe, which is connected to the lower end of the blade, into the furrow. A mandrel assembly, including a cylindrical member located in front of the leading edge of the pipe is tethered to the blade to enlarge the diameter of the furrow as it is cut so that the pipe can be readily pulled therethrough. The mandrel also protects the pipe from impact by buried obstacles. The mandrel assembly is releasably secured to the lower end of the blade by a releasable means including a crank assembly.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1987Date of Patent: July 4, 1989Assignee: Henkels & McCoy, Inc.Inventor: Robin J. Patent number: 4793183Abstract: A position sensing system and method of use in conjunction with a rail car mounted plow burying a cable adjacent the track. The plow is arranged for cutting a kerf in the ground and for inserting the cable therein as the car moves down the track. The plow is mounted on an articulated arm including plural sections which are movable with respect to one another to position the plow at any desired location adjacent the track to cut the kerf and place the cable therein. The position sensing system includes plural transducers including transmitter and receiver sections located with respect to the arm sections to provide signals indicative of the arm section positions with respect to one another and to the ground. The system also includes transducers for providing signals indicative of the position of the plow along the track and signals indicative of the amount of cable dispensed.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1987Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Assignee: Henkels & McCoy, Inc.Inventors: Martin F. Helmus, Joseph D. Pigott, Jr.

Patent number: 4784524Abstract: An apparatus for holding the plow blade of a railroad car-mounted cable laying device which includes support means on the railroad car for supporting the plow blade thereon and stop means on the support means for prohibiting the plow blade from sliding off the support means. When more than one plow blade is provided, tethering means is also provided between the plow blades for constraining the plow blades and prohibiting the plow blades from sliding off the support means.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1987Date of Patent: November 15, 1988Assignee: Henkels & McCoy, Inc.Inventor: Herman Stine
