Abstract: Instead of generating immune responses to several HIV proteins and risk over activating more CD4+ T cells (easy targets for HIV-1 infection) as current candidate vaccines try to do, a lower magnitude, narrowly focused, well maintained virus specific CD8+ T cell response to multiple subtypes should destroy and eliminate a few founder viruses without inducing inflammatory responses that may activate more CD4+ T cells and provide more targets for HIV-1 virus infection. Specifically, described herein is a method that focuses the immune response to the 12 protease cleavage sites.

Abstract: The invention relates to modifications of a non-ammoniacal thiosulfate process of leaching precious metals (e.g. gold or silver) from precious metal-containing ores. The process involves leaching the ore with an aqueous lixiviant containing a soluble thiosulfate other than ammonium thiosulfate, a copper compound and an organic compound that serves as a copper ligand (i.e. a ligand-forming compound). Four modifications of this process are effective for increasing the amount of precious metal that can be extracted, reducing the consumption of materials, or for improving the rate of extraction. These four process, which may be used singly or in any combination, include (a) additions of soluble lead (e.g. as lead nitrate), (b) additions of thiourea, (c) increases in dissolved oxygen, and (d) increases of temperature at ambient pressure. This avoids the use environmentally harmful chemicals and allows for extraction from a variety of ores, e.g., containing substantial amounts of sulfides and/or quartz.

The reaction is carried out in the absence of electrolytes and in the presence of a dispersed particulate heterogeneous catalyst. The reaction is carried out under pressure and relatively low temperature in a stirred tank reactor, preferably a continuous stirred tank reactor.

Abstract: The subject invention provides low fiber, yellow-seeded canola, and related canola meal and animal feed. Oil produced from this seed has at least 68% oleic acid and no more than 3% linolenic acid, relative to the total fatty acids in the oil. Specific canola lines exhibiting these characteristics are also provided.

Abstract: A CDR grafted humanized recombinant antibody against infection from Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) comprises a human Ig framework having CDRs from murine mAb 1A4A1 VH and VL. DNA sequences, expression vectors incorporating such sequences and transformed host cells are also provided. Also provided are pharmaceutical compositions and methods of prophylaxis and treatment against VEEV infection using the humanized recombinant antibodies of the invention.

Abstract: A method for altering the level of one or more carotenoids in a plant or a tissue within the plant is provided. Method comprises introducing a nucleic acid sequence comprising a regulatory region operatively associated with a silencing nucleotide sequence that reduces or eliminates the expression of a lycopene epsilon cyclase into the plant, and expressing the silencing nucleotide sequence. Expression of the sequence reduces the level of the lycopene epsilon cyclase in the plant or within a tissue of the plant, and results in altering one or more carotenoids.

Abstract: A process for preparing a rutin-enriched composition from plant biomass comprises extraction with an aqueous solution, and precipitation. An enzyme preparation, such as naringinase, is used for the transformation of rutin to higher value compositions containing increased proportions of isoquercitrin and quercetin.
