Patents Assigned to Heraeus Elektrochemie GmbH
  • Patent number: 5928710
Abstract: Disclosed is an industrial technique for electrode processing for the direct recoating of an electrode surface for use in an electrochemical process wherein the recoating operation is performed without disassembly of the electrode assembly. In the process, a coating solution is applied to the electrode surface and a temperature differential is established, or induced, and maintained between the electrode surface and other components of the assembly while the coating is cured on the electrode surface.

  • Patent number: 5733424
Abstract: An electrode for an electrochemical cell used in strip coating systems for continuous metal sheets has a plate-shaped electrode carrier, to which activated electrode components are connected mechanically in a detachable manner. The electrode carrier contains a metal core of material with good electrical conductivity, which, with the exception of the points where the activated electrode parts are connected, is surrounded by a jacketing of valve metal; on the side of the electrode carrier facing the cell wall, a corrosion- resistant plastic body in attached, against which the support means, the spring elements, the positioning elements, or the flow guide elements extending from the cell wall rest, these supports or elements thus being unable to cause any damage to the valve-metal jacketing of the electrode carrier.

  • Patent number: 5700572
Abstract: The invention provides a fiber material of PTFE and, optionally, hydrophilizing additives, for use in the production of diaphragms for the electrolysis of alkali chlorides, as well as for filter layers. The fiber material comprises fiber bundles and these, in turn, comprise individual microfibrils, there being irregularly shaped interstices between the microfibrils. The fiber material is produced in that a PTFE dispersion, consisting of a salt solution with PTFE particles and, optionally, hydrophilizing additives, is treated in a hot gas/vapor stream in a fluidized bed apparatus charged with inert solids. The method permits the fiber material to be produced also in larger quantities in an economic manner.

  • Patent number: 5660698
Abstract: An electrode plate of planar structure contains lamellar electrode elements, with adjacent electrode elements being separated from one another by a gap. For a better escape of the gas from the electrode/membrane area, the lamellar electrode elements are provided with an expanded-metal structure, the openings of which serve to improve the passage of gas. The electrode elements are provided with angled upper edge strips in order to facilitate the escape of gas in the vertical direction. The electrode configuration is particularly suitable as an anodically connected electrode in direct contact with an ion exchanger membrane, but can also be used as a cathode at a distance from the membrane.

  • Patent number: 5516411
Abstract: To permit continuous roll-off or stripping of metal in form of a ribbon, tape or foil from a rotating cathode roller or drum (3, 43) within a metal ion containing solution, the cathode roller or drum is cooled during operation and the solution of the processing liquid contains a halogen compound or a sulfur compound, for example zinc chloride, to obtain zinc in form of a ribbon, tape or foil. The cathode roller or drum is at least partly, and for example entirely submerged in the ion containing processing solution, rotatable about a horizontal or vertical axis, and the anodes (4, 44) are separated from the ion containing solution by a separating diaphragm or ion exchange membrane.

  • Patent number: 5478448
Abstract: An aqueous solution containing metal ions and sulfuric acid, especially a solution containing zinc ions, iron ions and/or copper ions, is placed for the cathodic precipitation of the metal ions into the anolyte chamber of an electrolysis cell divided by a cation exchanger membrane. Due to the voltage applied to the electrodes, metal ions and hydrogen ions migrate from the anolyte through the cation exchange membranes into the catholyte chamber and are there discharged, the sulfuric acid concentration in the anolyte being constantly elevated by anodic formation of protons. The regeneration can be used as an intermediate step of a chlorine gas-free regeneration of etching or extraction solutions.

  • Patent number: 5384020
Abstract: Apparatus and method for sealing an electrical connection between an anode structure for cathodic protection against corrosion and a connecting cable with an electrically insulating jacket, an annular body of elastic material, such as rubber for example, which surrounds in a sleeve-like manner the junction between an insulation-stripped end of the connecting cable and a socket on a current feed pin of titanium for the anode structure. By radial compression of a terminal body of plastically deformable material thrust onto the annular body the annular body is pressed at its one end onto the insulating jacket in the end area of the connecting cable and at its other end onto the outer surface of the current connecting pin of the anode structure, in a liquid-tight manner.

  • Patent number: 5362369
Abstract: An electrolytic cell, for demetallization of a solution containing metal ions, has a hydrogen sensor connected to a control and monitoring unit which controls the intensity of current applied across the cell's electrodes. Whenever the hydrogen concentration above the solution surface in the cell reaches a predetermined undesirably high level, the control unit makes a stepwise reduction in the applied current. This stepwise reduction continues until the ions in the solution are depleted to a predetermined level, at which point the solution is replaced.

  • Patent number: 5346608
Abstract: Neodymium and neodymium-iron alloys are obtained by electrolysis of a neodymium salt melt using magnetite as the anode material. The cathode is non-consumable or is made of iron to be consumed and form a neodymium-iron alloy. The electrolysis is preferably carried out under a protective atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5344540
Abstract: An electrochemical cell for electrolytic treatment of aqueous solutions, particularly for cyanide detoxification or oxidation, has a solution container with a cell housing mounted on it, in which an electrode stack is located. Solution is delivered to the cell housing in the region of its housing bottom by a circulation device, and after passing through the electrode stack by an overflow over the side walls of the cell housing, is delivered to a cascadelike drain container with its own overflow for the sake of degassing; after passing through the second overflow, the now largely degassed solution is returned to the solution container and recirculated. The invention provides a compact structural form with a pressure-free recirculation system and simple maintenance of the electrode stack or individual electrodes.

  • Patent number: 5334301
Abstract: An electro-chemical cell suitable for chromic acid regeneration or the electro-chemical treatment of methane sulphonic acid has several plate shaped bipolar electrodes which are spaced by means of frames to form an electrolyte space between every two adjacent electrodes. The electrolyte spaces are closed at the sides and at the bottom so they are impermeable to liquids and adjacent bipolar electrodes are electrically insulated against each other. The electrodes are tightly secured against the frame by means of hose-shaped sealing elements that can expand if internal pressure is applied, these sealing elements each being located in a fixed position in a U-shaped groove inside the frames. The cell is not sealed at the liquid surface of the electrolyte, however, it can be equipped with a cover, depending on the application. In order to remove an electrode, the sealing pressure is decreased by means of a pressure reduction in the interior of the sealing elements.
