  • Patent number: 4529232
Abstract: A flange connection for connection in series hollow cylinder barrels forming a screw press. The cylinder barrel is formed with a groove adjacent one end thereof, and radially reduced, stepped portions of flange ring halves are positioned in the groove. Bore holes are formed at the abutment line between the flange ring halves and the external surface of the barrel, and pins are inserted in the bore holes. In this manner, radial, axial and rotative movement of the ring half is prevented, without the need for welding or otherwise permanently securing the connection.

  • Patent number: 4515738
Abstract: A method of monitoring the production of extruded composite profiles by an extrusion head fed by a plurality of worm extruders in which, immediately after the profile has been extruded, it is monitored by spacing measurement devices which determine the spacing between the devices and the profile. The measured spacing is then transmitted to a regulator or governor and compared with a pre-selected value. The governor or regulator controls the worm speed of the individual extruders and, if the measured value differs from the pre-selected value, alters the worm speed of one or more of the individual extruders until the measured value is the same as the pre-selected value.

  • Patent number: 4509419
Abstract: A worm press for mechanically separating liquid/solid mixtures comprising a feed region and a pin-barrel pressing region. The worm has at least one flight, each of which flights is interrupted so as to enable the flight to pass the stationary pins in the pin-barrel region. The downstream ends or points of the worm flight portions formed by the interruptions are specially shaped in order to increase considerably the strength and service-life of the highly stressed points. This is achieved by reducing the size of the thrust flank, so that the flank subtends an angle of from 20.degree. to 50.degree. relative to the line perpendicular to the worm axis. Desirably, the thus-angled profiled tip region of the flight portions are interchangeable.

  • Patent number: 4508454
Abstract: In an extruder, for extruding thermoplastic synthetic material or rubber or for use for pressing water out of a material, a screw rotates in a cylindrical chamber and helical conveying lands provided on the screw are interrupted at positions at which pins project into the chamber thereby forming grooves to receive the pins. To sense breakage of a pin, for example caused by metal particles in the extrudate, signal-generating means are provided in a blind bore in each pin, receipt of a signal from the signal generating means causing the screw to be stopped from rotating thereby to prevent further damage.

  • Patent number: 4503764
Abstract: The press installation includes a screw rotatably mounted in a cylinder. A very high pressure is produced to separate liquids from a mixture, with the separated liquid being drained off through bore holes in stationary pins at the location where it is released. In the discharge zone, the screw is devoid of threads whereby the annular cross sectional area between the screw core and the cylinder is increased. This extends the retention time and thus the amount of dehydration of the material as it passes through the discharge zone. Additionally provided in the discharge zone are annular offsets around the screw core in the vicinity of the pins, which prevent the penetration of solids into the drainage bore holes.

  • Patent number: 4488465
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for cutting open-flanked V-belts, for example, for use as fan belts in automobiles. Individual V-belts are cut from a vulcanized roll formed from a plurality of layers of rubber and reinforcements. The roll is rotatably disposed on support devices, the support devices being so arranged that at least a portion of the rotation of the roll occurs in straight lines. The belts are cut in the straight line regions. Extremely uniform flank cuts are achieved thereby. The straight line is defined between two rollers, over which the vulcanized roll is forced and becomes tensioned. Cutting devices are moved into and out of the straight line portion of the rotational path of the roll in order to produce the flank cuts.

  • Patent number: 4484878
Abstract: A device for monitoring the filling level of the degassing space in an extruder used for processing thermoplastic materials comprises a level detection orifice located in the degassing dome or jacket of the extruder which opening is connected to a conduit. The conduit leads through a regulator device to a gas source. Connected to the conduit, between the regulator device and the orifice, is a pressure sensor such as a pressure difference switch. If the level of molten material in the dome rises above a preselected level, it blocks the opening and produces a back-pressure in the conduit. The switch is automatically actuated by this back-pressure and produces a signal. Appropriate action can then be taken to prevent the further rise of the molten material in the dome and to prevent blockage of the degassing device.

  • Patent number: 4457227
Abstract: An extraction device for separating liquid from a liquid-solid mixture such as sludge or beet slices comprising a screw rotatably driveable in a barrel. The screw has a helical flight formed thereon defining a screw thread. The depth of the thread, in the axial direction of the screw, decreases in a direction opposite to the direction of conveyance of the material.A secondary helical flight formed on the screw defines a second thread for conveying extracted liquid in a direction to the direction of conveyance of the mixture. The two threads are adjacent one another. The second thread is closed at each of its ends, upstream, in the direction of conveyance of the mixture, of an outlet in the barrel for the solid components and downstream of an inlet for the mixture.

  • Patent number: 4431311
Abstract: In the production of foamed thermoplastic synthetic material, synthetic material is melted in a screw extruder and fluid propellant is injected into the molten sythetic material. The residence time of the molten mixture has a determining effect in regard to uniform distribution of the propellant and thus also in regard to the uniformity of the cell structure. In order to provide for homogeneous mixing of the propellant and uniform cooling of the molten mixture, without using an excessively long screw extruder, the screw extruder is provided, downstream of a melting region thereof and of an injection opening thereof through which propellant is introduced, with flow obstruction structure which is by-passed by static mixing structure disposed outside the screw extruder. The molten synthetic material is simultaneously mixed with the propellant and cooled in the static mixing structure.

  • Patent number: 4423960
Abstract: The advantages of a twin-screw extruder, especially the good plasticizing and homogenizing effect, are to be retained in the present invention with a simultaneous, above-average degassing output of the extruder. This object is achieved by dividing the twin-screw extruder into two stages (a) the plasticizing and homogenizing stage with a high screw torque and (b) the degassing and discharging stage in which a large, free degassing volume is achieved by a reduction in the screw core, by an enlargement of the screw housing and by adapting the screw diameter to the respective housing diameters in the degassing and discharging stage.

  • Patent number: 4415268
Abstract: A temperable screw casing for a twin screw extruder for processing plastics comprises a supporting member and wear resistant liner disposed therein. The liner has a spectacle shaped bore accommodating both screws of the extruder. The supporting member, which engages around the liner, takes over the reinforcing function of the screw casing. Low technical manufacturing cost and satisfactory tempering of the screw casing is achieved by providing the liner with a circular external cross section, surrounded by a supporting member which has a circular internal recess. Axial tempering holes are provided in wedge shaped projections which extend into the spectacle shaped bore of the liner. Axial tempering holes are disposed opposite one another in the supporting member, at the sides of the spectacle shaped bore of the liner. These result in individual tempering systems, by which the liner and supporting member can be tempered independently.

  • Patent number: 4410306
Abstract: A granulation apparatus in which a conical chamber having a downwardly and outwardly inclined wall is provided for collecting cut granules. The wall is covered with a flowing, circulating film of water, such film being of uniform thickness and circulating quickly. An annular water channel is provided around the cylindrical or conical chamber for collecting the granules, the annular channel being fed through a tangential water inlet. A flat, annular horizontal acceleration chamber is disposed in the upper region of the annular channel and communicates with the channel through an annular aperture formed in the upper radially outward region of the annular channel. At its radially inner periphery the acceleration chamber communicates with the chamber through an annular aperture. The disposition of the inlet, the channel and the acceleration chamber cause water flowing into the chamber to be subjected to centrifugal force whereby the film of water remains closely adjacent the wall and is of uniform thickness.
