  • Patent number: 8843742
Abstract: Methods, systems, apparatuses and program products are disclosed for protecting computers and similar equipment from undesirable occurrences, especially attacks by malware. Invariant information, such as pure code and some data tables may be enrolled for later revalidation by code operating outside the normal context. For example, a periodic interrupt may invoked a system management mode interrupt service routine to discover whether code regions accessible to Protected Mode programs have become corrupted or otherwise changed, such as by tampering from untrusted or untrustworthy programs that have easy access only to protected mode operation.

  • Publication number: 20140211264
Abstract: Techniques pertaining to printing a document are disclosed. A computer server may receive decoded document metadata and locate a document in a document repository using the document metadata. The server may determine whether the document metadata is indicative of a most recent version of the document and, if not, retrieve the most recent version of the document. The server may also create a tag for the retrieved most recent version of the document comprised of up to date document metadata in which the tag data is embedded in a graphic that is merged with the most recent version of the document. The server may create a print job for the most recent version of the document and send the print job to a network enabled printer over a network connection.

  • Publication number: 20140085646
Abstract: An image forming system includes a substrate transport unit, an image forming module, an event sensing module, a heartbeat generation module, a signal detection module, and a repositioning module. The substrate transport unit may transport substrate including at least one splice along a transport path. The image forming module may form an image on the substrate. The event sensing module may detect an event and provide an event signal along a signal path in response to the event. The heartbeat generation module may provide a heartbeat signal different than the event signal along the signal path. The signal detection module may determine a presence of the event signal and an absence of the heartbeat signal. The repositioning module may move the image forming module from a first position to a second position in response to a determination of the presence of the event signal.

  • Patent number: 8576264
Abstract: A registration device for a mail processing system having wide print nozzle arrays that reduces problems associated with printing on variable thickness media. A thin wire, held by guides, is strung across the print nozzle openings in the registration plate to support and guide the top (print) surface of a mail piece and to prevent the mail piece from protruding into the openings. The guides are positioned such that the wire passes between zones where there are no print nozzles located. A tensioning device is provided to adjust the tension of the wire to ensure the wire maintains its position within the openings. The wire acts as a guide to maintain the optimal gap between the mail piece top surface and the print nozzles.

  • Patent number: 8543643
Abstract: A system and method for servicing an inquiry command from a host device requesting inquiry data about a sequential device on a storage area network. The inquiry data may be cached by a circuitry coupled to the host device and the sequential device. The circuitry may reside in a router. In some embodiments, depending upon whether the sequential device is available to process the inquiry command, the circuitry may forward the inquiry command to the sequential device or process the inquiry command itself, utilizing a cached version of the inquiry data. The cached version may include information indicating that the sequential device is not available. In some embodiments, regardless whether the sequential device is available, the circuitry may process the inquiry command and return the inquiry data from a cache memory.

  • Patent number: 8341211
Abstract: A system and method for servicing inquiry commands, wherein inquiry data is stored in a memory and if an inquiry command for a target device is received while the target device is busy processing another command, the stored inquiry data is returned in response to the command. In one embodiment, a router contains a memory for storing static inquiry data corresponding to each of a plurality of sequential devices connected thereto. The first time a host sends an inquiry command to one of the sequential devices, the router routes the command to the target device and stores the data returned by the device. Subsequent inquiry commands are serviced by passing the command through to the target device if it is not busy, or returning inquiry data from the router's memory if the target device is busy processing another command.

  • Publication number: 20120239525
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining a quantitative guideline are provided. One such method may involve receiving into an electronic device a print order from a customer to a print service provider, determining the requisite tasks to fulfill the print order, determining which resources of the print service provider are capable of undertaking the requisite tasks, and determining respective costs and lead times associated with undertaking each requisite task using each capable resource. In particular, such costs and lead times may be determined based at least in part on a dynamic behavioral model of cost and a dynamic behavioral model of lead time associated with each resource.

  • Patent number: 8261335
Abstract: An online application enables an end user to navigate to a web site, upload digital images, and to combine those images with words in a stylized template to create a user-generated story. A story is a web page, typically a collection of photos and words that are brought together by a stylized template that can be customized by the end user. Preferably, a given story is available from the site at a given location (at a URL) that may be private or public. A given story may be shared with other end users, published to other web sites or web logs, or maintained solely for one's own use. The invention also provides for multiple end users to collaborate to create a “shared” story.

  • Patent number: 8228527
Abstract: A digital still camera is used for taking and storing digital representations of a plurality of images. A printer, such as an ink jet printer or a laser printer, is used for generating graphical representations of selected ones of the plurality of images on a preselected print media such as a paper. A flash memory card, floppy diskette, direct data link or some other data transfer scheme is used to transfer the digital representations of the plurality of images from the digital still camera to the printer. The printer includes programming for generating a combination proof sheet and order form. The combination proof sheet and order form can include an array of thumbnail images and a plurality of image selection and/or image enhancement user designation areas such as bubbles to be filled in by the user with a pencil. The printer includes a scanner and related circuitry and software for scanning the combination proof sheet and order form to detect the user designation areas completed by the user.

  • Patent number: 8215759
Abstract: Methods and means for imaging on paper media are provided. A data file of an image to be printed is analyzed. A pattern for a clear fluid is determined according to the analysis. The pattern of clear fluid is applied to a paper media traveling in a particular direction, wherein the pattern is generally elongated along the direction of travel. The pattern of clear fluid is defined by a maximum width that is generally equal to the maximum width of the image to be formed. One or more colored inks are applied such that the image is formed and is supported by the paper media. The paper media exhibits reduced cockle as a result of the pattern of clear fluid.

  • Patent number: 8144555
Abstract: Compatibility information embedded in an optical medium modifies actions allowed by predetermined non-compatible optical disc drives on the optical medium, such as optical disc drives that may suffer damage if certain actions are performed on the optical medium. For instance, a compatibility engine of the optical disc drive applies compatibility information read from an optical medium to determine restrictions to impose on the use of the optical medium, such as restricting the optical disc drive from writing to the optical medium, reading from the optical medium or performing any operations until an update to the optical disc drive firmware is performed either automatically or by display of a compatibility user interface at an information handling system associated with the optical disc drive. In one embodiment, the compatibility information identifies incompatible optical disc drives and firmware versions by unique identifiers.
