Abstract: A method of determining a state of a Storage Area Network SAN is provided comprising analyzing data collected from components in the SAN, calculating a redundancy level of the SAN based on the analyzed data, and determining the state of the SAN based on the calculated redundancy level. The redundancy levels indicate the sensitivity of the SAN to a fault in one of the components. The method also includes receiving user policy settings allowing automatic correction of the SAN and auto-correcting the SAN in response to a change in the SAN state and in dependence on the user policy settings. The redundancy levels can be used by an administrator to set the user policy settings. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also provided.

  • Patent number: 7143268
Abstract: A data processor includes execution clusters, an instruction cache, an instruction issue unit, and alignment and dispersal circuitry. Each execution cluster includes an instruction execution pipeline having a number of processing stages, and each execution pipeline is a number of lanes wide. The processing stages execute instruction bundles, where each instruction bundle has one or more syllables. Each lane is capable of receiving one of the syllables of an instruction bundle. The instruction cache includes a number of cache lines. The instruction issue unit receives fetched cache lines and issues complete instruction bundles toward the execution clusters. The alignment and dispersal circuitry receives the complete instruction bundles from the instruction issue unit and routes each received complete instruction bundle to a correct one of the execution clusters. The complete instruction bundles are routed as a function of at least one address bit associated with each complete instruction bundle.

  • Patent number: 6997455
Abstract: A method and apparatus for correcting skew of an advancing sheet responsive to the detection of one or the other of aligned fiducial marks located near each of the opposite side edges adjacent the sheet leading edge. Upon detection of a first of the fiducial marks, the advance of the side edge of the sheet associated with the detected fiducial mark is repeatedly dithered rearward and then forward while the opposite side edge of the sheet continues to advance. The dithering of one side edge while continuing the advance of the opposite side edge continues until the other of the fiducial marks is detected after which the advance of the sheet is resumed.

  • Patent number: 6989910
Abstract: The method of the invention enables installation of a network printer onto a client processor and employs a server for managing printer installations. Initially, the server receives a printer identifier message from the network printer and then creates an executable installation program using identifier information from the printer identifier message. Thereafter, the server transmits an e-mail message to the client processor, which e-mail message includes an executable printer driver installation program. Upon receipt of the e-mail message, the client processor recognizes the executable installation program and, upon installation thereof, to utilize the network printer.

  • Patent number: 6792568
Abstract: Data transferred from a host system to magnetic tape storage are divided into blocks that are converted, written to storage and read. An error checker determines whether errors in each block exceed a predetermined number. The result is output with corresponding header identifying information. Information, including header identifying information corresponding to each block written to storage, is stored in a history store. Header identifying information output by the error checker is compared with the header identifying information to identify the data block relating to the error checking output. The marked data block associated with the matching header identifying information is indicated as being good or bad according to the error checker. Selected parts of the header identifying information are masked to compare only the remaining portion of the information with the corresponding history store information.

  • Patent number: 6691139
Abstract: A method for creating a standby data processing system located at a standby site, which is remotely located from a primary site. The method comprises a first step of computing a difference between an active data file and an archive data file to produce a delta image at the primary site. Another step is transmitting the active data file and the delta image, separately in time sequence, from the primary site to a standby site. A final step is combining the delta image with the active data file at the standby site, to produce an archive data file. An advantage of this method is the creation of a standby data processing system, while using a lower bandwidth to create this additional site.

  • Patent number: 6611880
Abstract: A computer automatically selects a device, such as a printer, over a network for the computer to use without a user having to provide the network address of the device. The computer identifies a group of devices connected to a network that meet certain pre-determined criteria. The computer then selects the device from this group that has the lowest uptime. This device is assumed to be the device the user wishes to configure their computer to use. After the device is selected, the computer then can operate to configure itself to use the device.

  • Patent number: 6589000
Abstract: The invention combines the binding techniques described in application Ser. No. 09/320,060 titled Binding Sheet Media Using Imaging Material with a buckle chute type folding device to form self mailers and other folded and bound or sealed document. The device for folding and binding sheet media using imaging material as the binder includes a buckle chute, a binder downstream in the paper path from the buckle chute, an input driver proximate to and upstream in the paper path from the buckle chute, and an exit driver proximate to and between the buckle chute and the binder in the paper path. The input driver directs the media sheet into the buckle chute and, in cooperation with the buckle chute, buckles the media sheet along a fold line. The exit driver receives the media sheet from the buckle chute, folds the media sheet along the fold line and directs the media sheet towards the binder.
