  • Patent number: 9266258
Abstract: A system, method and apparatus for manufacturing high density magnetic media is disclosed. A flexible mold having a very low modulus of less than about 4 GPa is made on a rigid support. The mold nano-imprints a resist material on disks for hard disk drives. The flexible mold may comprise a perfluoropolyether with urethane acrylate end groups with a low surface adhesion from which the cured resist is easily released.

  • Patent number: 9269378
Abstract: The present invention relates to stray magnetic shielding in PMR systems. The stray magnetic fields can funnel through the magnetic write head into the recording medium and lead to degradation in performance, even erasure. By placing a magnetic shield around the return pole, and spaced from the main pole by a nonmagnetic material, the stray magnetic flux is diverted into the additional stray field magnetic shields such that the stray magnetic fields travel mainly through the shield, away from the main pole. This ensures the stray magnetic flux density will be decreased greatly before reaching the recording medium, unable to negatively affect performance. To further ensure ease of manufacturing, the magnetic shield is made from the same material as the main pole, the return pole, or both.

  • Patent number: 9263086
Abstract: A hard disk drive (HDD) is described which includes a magnetic field-generating device in the vicinity of a load/unload ramp such that the write head moves into a magnetic field generated by the device while the head is being unloaded from disk, whereby the magnetic field pins in a predominant direction the direction of magnetization of a magnetic shield associated with the write head, and away from the direction toward the disk. Recording magnetic field leakage associated with the shield is thereby suppressed and corresponding far track interference is inhibited.

  • Patent number: 9251835
Abstract: A patterned magnetic media having offset servo and data regions. The media can be constructed by a method that allows both a data region and a servo region to be patterned without the patterning of one region adversely affecting the patterning of the other region. The method results in a patterned data region a patterned servo region and intermediate regions between the servo and data regions. The intermediate regions, which are most likely, but not necessarily, asymmetrical with one another indicate that the method has been used to pattern the media.

  • Patent number: 9245546
Abstract: A contamination mitigation cap for a hard disk drive actuator pivot assembly is affixed to the rotatable carriage of an actuator assembly and, in conjunction with a bearing hub cap, forms a labyrinth seal for retaining pivot bearing contamination. • Patent number: 9236069
Abstract: A method for making a current-perpendicular-to-the-plane magnetoresistive sensor structure produces a top electrode that is “self-aligned” on the top of the sensor and with a width less than the sensor trackwidth. A pair of walls of ion-milling resistant material are fabricated to a predetermined height above the biasing layers at the sensor side edges. A layer of electrode material is then deposited onto the top of the sensor between the two walls. The walls serve as a mask during angled ion milling to remove outer portions of the electrode layer. The height of the walls and the angle of ion milling determines the width of the resulting top electrode. This leaves the reduced-width top electrode located on the sensor. Because of the directional ion milling using walls that are aligned with the sensor side edges, the reduced-width top electrode is self-aligned in the center of the sensor.

  • Patent number: 9236066
Abstract: In general, techniques are described for writing data to a storage device that comprises an interface and a controller. The interface may receive a request to sequentially write data stored in a first group of tracks to an I-region, where the first group of tracks was also previously written. The controller may move data stored in a second group of consecutive tracks different than the first group of tracks from the I-region to an E-region, the second group having cardinality equal to the tracks that must be moved for the first group to be written sequentially in the I-region. The E-region comprises a portion of the storage device reserved for temporary storage. The controller may determine a position of the I-region where data from one of the second group was previously stored, and write data from the first group of tracks sequentially to the I-region, starting at the position.

  • Patent number: 9236076
Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording disk includes a template layer below a Ru or Ru alloy underlayer, with a granular Co alloy recording layer formed on the underlayer. substrate. The template layer comprises nanoparticles spaced-apart and partially embedded within a polymer material, with the nanoparticles protruding above the surface of the polymer material. A seed layer covers the surface of the polymer material and the protruding nanoparticles and an underlayer of Ru or a Ru alloy covers the seed layer. The protruding nanoparticles serve as the controlled nucleation sites for the Ru or Ru alloy atoms. The nanoparticle-to-nanoparticle distances can be controlled during the formation of the template layer. This enables control of the Co alloy grain diameter distribution as well as grain-to-grain distance distribution.

  • Patent number: 9229813
Abstract: Data storage devices are described with an ECC system that generate additional on-demand ECC information for a previously written track to provide for correction of data errors in the track and thereby avoid having to rewrite the track. Embodiments of the invention address the squeeze-error problem that arises when writing the next (second) track in a sequence causes errors to be introduced in the adjacent previously written (first) track. In alternative embodiments the existence of the data errors in the first track can be detected by reading the track or by estimating the number of likely errors using head position data measured while writing the first and second tracks. The additional on-demand ECC information can be written on any track that is available.
