Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus to be used in the field of accelerator mass spectrometry for detection of low concentrations of isotopes of interest (including, but not limited to chlorine-36) in order to suppress isobaric interferences from isobars having a lower atomic number Z (also referred to as "interfering isobars") then said isotopes, which apparatus comprises means for an at least twofold deceleration of said isotopes and said isobars by their interaction with matter in order to create an energy difference between said isotopes and said isobars based on the Z-dependence of their deceleration.
