    Abstract: A liquid crystal display device superior in mass productivity and improved image quality with a higher contrast ratio by decreasing the occurrence of defective display due to the disorder of the initial liquid crystal alignment and realizing stable alignment of liquid crystals, comprising: a pair of substrates 101 and 102, at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer 110? disposed between the pair of substrates; a group of electrodes formed on at least one of the pair of substrates to apply an electric field to the liquid crystal layer; plural active elements 115 connected to the group of electrodes; and an orientation control film 109 disposed on at least one of the pair of substrates, wherein said orientation control film made of a photosensitive polyimide, a polyamide acid ester and a polyamide acid is given orientation control ability by being irradiated with substantially linearly polarized light.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a technique which makes a backlight used in a liquid crystal display device thin and light-weight. The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device which includes a display panel and a backlight arranged behind the display panel, wherein the backlight includes a film-like light guide member, a film-like light semi-transmissive member adhered to a first surface of the light guide member which faces the display panel in an opposed manner, a film-like reflective member adhered to a back surface of the light guide member opposite to the first surface, and a spot light source arranged at a position of the light guide member at which light is incident on the light guide member from the first surface or the back surface. A refractive index of the light semi-transmissive member is set smaller than a refractive index of the light guide member.

    Abstract: In order to solve the problem that sufficient center brightness is not always obtained in a conventional liquid crystal TV and a liquid crystal monitor, a backlight module of the invention includes a plurality of cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CFL) and a diffusing reflector below, the distance between the respective CFLs is arranged so that a central portion is narrow and an end portion is wide, and the backlight module includes a triangular sectional projection structure on at the diffusing reflector only between the CFLs between which the distance is the widest, in the end portion. According to the invention, enhancement of the center brightness without increasing consumption power, reduction in the number of CFLs, and cost reduction accompanying it are achieved.
