Abstract: This invention is a method for converting fine particles of superabsorbent polymers into larger particles. The invention is primarily directed to aqueous solution processes for preparing superabsorbent polymers. In such aqueous solution polymerization methods, the polymerization reaction product is a high viscosity gel which is dried and ground into particles. In this grinding step, a portion of the product is produced as undesired fine particles having poor absorbency and poor fabrication properties; i.e. they "gel block" and dust. According to the invention, fine superabsorbent polymer particles (up to about 3 parts) are mixed with the high viscosity reaction product gel (100 parts) containing about 20 parts by weight of superabsorbent polymer and water (5 parts per part of recycled particles) to form a mixture with improved rheological properties.
Abstract: The present invention describes a process for priming a polymeric film with a primer coating composition and overcoating with a silicone release coating. Silicone release films are well known and serve as temporary supports for an adhesive or tacky surface such as for labels, pressure sensitive tape, etc. The primer coating composition, before dilution with water, comprises from about 25 to 75% by weight of a glycidoxy silane and from about 75 to 25% by weight of a copolyester. The copolyester comprises from about 40 to 98 mol percent isophthalic acid; from about 0 to about 50 mol percent of at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic acid; from about 2 to about 20 mol percent of at least one sulfonate group attached to a dicarboxylic nucleus; and about 100 mol percent of glycol having from about 2 to 11 carbon atoms. Typical glycidoxy silanes that can be employed in the primer coating composition include glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane.

Abstract: This invention relates to water developable, negative working photosensitized sheet constructions which, upon exposure to an actinic radiation source through a screened image, can accurately reproduce said image. Abstract: A method is provided for purifying a crude N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP) containing color bodies or their precursors, the method comprising: a) forming a wet crude APAP; and b) subsequently drying said crude APAP in the presence of a sufficient amount of an acetylating agent for a sufficient period of time to convert said color bodies or their precursors to substantially non-color bodies.
Abstract: A process is described for recycling polyester and cotton blend fabrics by separating the polyester from the cotton fabric. The novel process to recycle the polyester/cotton blend fabrics includes the steps of (a) providing a polyester and cotton blend fabric; (b) charging said blend into a sulfone solvent; (c) dissolving the polyester in the sulfone solvent; (d) separating the dissolved polyester and sulfone solvent solution from the cotton fabric; (e) filtering the cotton to obtain isolated, cotton fabric.
Abstract: A process for producing poly(1,3-propylene terephthalate) from the reaction of either terephthalic acid or a lower dialkyl ester of terephthalic acid and 1,3-propanediol and polymerization of the monomer produced therefrom using a novel catalyst system. The novel catalyst composition includes employing an effective catalytic amount tin in the polycondensation reaction. Using the catalyst system and Hostaperm.RTM. pigments allows for the production of poly(1,3-propylene terephthalate) having yellowness of less than 4 and an IV of at least 0.80 dl/g.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for the production of calcium salts of hydantoic acids and which comprises the steps of reacting a hydantoin with a calcium base material such as calcium hydroxide in an aqueous medium at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient period of time to form the calcium salt of the corresponding hydantoic acid and then separating the calcium salt of such acid from the reaction mass. This separation can include the further steps of cooling the reaction mass down to facilitate the precipitation of the acid/salt crystals and then separating the precipitate by means of filtering or centrifugating. These acids can then be subjected to a HNO.sub.2 -mediated decarbamoylation process followed by an optical resolution step to thus provide high yields of D-p-hydroxyphenylglycine which is a key synthetic immediate or building block for semi-synthetic penicillin and cephalosporins.
Abstract: A high efficiency air filtration media comprises: about 5 to about 20% by weight of fibrids; about 5 to about 20% by weight of a binder; and about 60 to about 90% by weight of staple fiber. The media has a pressure drop of air across a face of the media of less than or equal to 0.4 inches of water. The media, also, has a sodium chloride particulate test for respirator filter percent efficiency of greater than or equal to 60%.

Abstract: There is disclosed and claimed a process whereby S(+)-ibuprofen L-lysinate salt is produced by selective precipitation from a mixture containing enantiomers of ibuprofen and L-lysine. The quantity of L-lysine is not more than about a molar equivalent of the quantity of S(+)-ibuprofen in the ibuprofen enantiomeric mixture. The mother liquors after separating the above salt are enriched in R-ibuprofen which is racemized by a novel thermal racemization process and may then be recycled.

Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for supplying cellulose acetate tow for the manufacture of cigarette filters from the transport jet of a tow opener to a cigarette filter rodmaking garniture. The apparatus is a frustoconical member having a multiplicity of apertures in the wall thereof and is attached directly to the transport jet. The apparatus has an internal diameter the same size as the exit opening of the transport jet. The opposite end of the adapter is inserted into the tow intake of the garniture. Transport gas that is introduced by the transport jet escapes through apertures in the adapter wall as the tow enters the garniture intake. A closely fitting rotatable sleeve having apertures in the wall thereof can be used to reduce the escape of transport gas through the adapter wall for optimizing performance of the adapter with tows of various processing characteristics. Tow yield is improved and pressure drop variability is reduced.
Abstract: A method of preparing a catalyst particularly useful in the reaction of ethylene, oxygen and acetic acid in the vapor phase to form vinyl acetate comprises impregnating a porous support with water soluble salts of palladium and gold, fixing the palladium and gold on the support as water insoluble compounds by immersing the impregnated support in a reactive solution and tumbling the impregnated support in the reactive solution for at least 1/2 hour to begin precipitation of the insoluble compounds and completing precipitation of the insoluble compounds on the support and reducing the insoluble compounds to free palladium and gold. The catalysts prepared in this manner have been shown to provide improvement with respect to reduced selectivity to CO.sub.2 during the vinyl acetate forming reaction.
