    Abstract: A hydraulic system for controlling the operation of the intake or exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine. For each valve there is a sealed hydraulic chamber with one plunger driven by a rotating cam to a camshaft and another plunger for actuating the valve. A single solenoid valve is connected by a separate passage having a check valve to each of a plurality of hydraulic chambers. The single solenoid valve can be opened during the actuation of any one of the valves to cause rapid closing of the valve by draining the hydraulic oil from the hydraulic chamber without causing premature actuation of another valve or effecting the subsequent operation of other valves after closing of the single solenoid valve.

    Abstract: A roof lining structure in a motor vehicle includes a roof lining base member and a vibration-damping layer interposed between an upper surface of the base member and a lower surface of a roof panel of the motor vehicle. The roof lining base member comprises a support layer having a cellular structure, and a reinforcing layer disposed at least partly in the roof lining base member. The upper surface of the vibration-damping layer is held in intimate contact with the lower surface of the roof panel. The vibration-damping layer is bonded to the roof panel by an adhesive layer. The vibration-damping layer is made of a material having such a mechanical strength that the vibration-damping layer will be torn apart vertically with a tearing force weaker than the bonding strength of the adhesive layer.

    Abstract: The speed reduction ratio of a continuously variable speed transmission for transmitting engine power with continuously variable speed to drive road wheels is controlled by detecting a parameter representing a driver's intention of acceleration or deceleration, establishing a reference engine speed corresponding to the detected parameter, and controlling the speed reduction ratio so as to equalize an actual engine speed with the reference engine speed, at a predetermined time interval. When the actual engine speed is lower than the reference engine speed, a controlling ouput value for the speed reduction ratio for bringing the actual engine speed into agreement with the reference engine speed is established based on the difference between the actual engine speed and the reference engine speed, and a predicted engine speed after elapse of the predetermined time interval is calculated based on the rate of =change of the actual engine speed.

In the metallic mold for the rocker arm, a sprue is provided close to the position where the wear-resistive piece is disposed with respect to the position where the bearing section is formed, and the direction of the sprue is directed towards the position where the wear-resistive place is disposed.

The closed curve about which the cylinder curve is generated is preferred such that there is a continuous change of curvature without discontinuity in that curvature in the cylindrical curve. The avoidance of discontinuity in the generating curve aids in mass production considerations and cutter life. A plurality of intake and exhaust port arrangements are disclosed illustrating four intake ports and four exhaust ports on opposite sides of the major axis of symmetry of the defined cylinder. In one embodiment, the outermost of the ports are smaller and are positioned closer to the major axis of symmetry.
