    Abstract: The invention is a weld metal for welding of a titanium alloy member to a ferrous based alloy member as an intermediate transition zone between such members so as to overcome the metallurgical imcompatability of each such member, and which consists of a vanadium metal, titanium and iron and inconsequential amounts of brittle intermetallic compounds. The preferred weld metal is vanadium rich and contains no more than 50% combined weight of titanium and such a weld metal is produced in accordance with our invention by fusion welding, particularly capacitor discharge welding, which because of its inherent but heretofore unrecognized extremely fast quench or freeze rates will produce a fusion weld between these two metallurgically incompatible alloys which is free of brittle intermetallic compounds. It is also part of our invention that such a weld metal of the aforesaid composition will have independent use as a welding alloy, particularly when fabricated in sheet form.

    Abstract: An improved pneumatic-hydraulic actuated single action pull type installation tool for installing pull type fasteners is disclosed which includes a continuously pressurized fluid reservoir operative to maintain a minimum positive pressure on the hydraulic circuit during operation so as to protect the integrity of the hydraulic circuit during normal operating pressure fluctuations and to reduce the possibility of air being drawn into the hydraulic system during sudden pressure drops in the actuating pressure chamber which may occur at the time the pintail portion is separated from the fastener. Further, the reservoir provides a source of make up hydraulic fluid to replace any fluid which may be lost due to leakage. Suitable valves are provided to enable the reservoir to selectively communicate with both driving and return portions of the hydraulic circuit while still enabling selective pressurization thereof.

    Abstract: This disclosure relates to swage type fasteners including a pin having a plurality of combination locking and breakneck grooves and a collar adapted to be swaged into the grooves with one of the grooves acting as a breakneck whereby the excess length of pin is severed generally at the end of the collar and also relates to a method of making the pin. The multigrip pin is formed generally into its final shape and then is subject to a heat treating process to provide a desirable microstructure whereby more consistent breaks at the selected groove occurs. In one form of the invention a desirable microstructure consists of predominantly pearlite colonies with a proeutectoid ferrite matrix interspersed at the boundaries of pearlite colonies.

The entrant resistance angle is selected to be of a magnitude to provide hold-off of the locking collar. The strength of the mandrel and other characteristics of fastener components are related to the force required to deform the locking collar along the entrant resistance angle such that a high strength blind fastener is provided which can be set by a single action tool.

    Abstract: A blind fastener is disclosed which comprises a sleeve and pin of a selected metal in which the pin is designed to form a blind head over a wide range of grips which offers substantially uniform tensile values over the entire grip range. The blind head forming end of the pin includes a plurality of spaced annular or helical ribs formed between spaced annular or helical grooves which are designed to progressively distort or fold as the pin is pulled through the sleeve, at least one of the ribs remaining in an unfolded condition after the fastener is set. The pin shank and internal opening of the sleeve may be provided with complementary tapers to provide a sealing effect if desired.
