  • Patent number: 6862706
Abstract: A method of terminating two or more constituent encoders of a turbo encoder employing a turbo code, comprising the step of: generating tail input bits at each of two or more constituent encoders, including deriving the tail input bits from each of the two or more constituent encoders separately from a contents of shift registers within each of the two or more constituent encoders, after an encoding of information bits by the two or more constituent encoders; puncturing one or more tail output bits such that 1/R output tail bits are transmitted for each of a plurality of trellis branches, wherein R is a turbo code rate employed by the turbo encoder during an information bit transmission. In yet another variation, the step of puncturing the tail output bits further comprises the step of: transmitting, during trellis termination, the tail output bits, only if they are sent from an output branch of one of the two or more constituent encoders that are used during information bit transmission.

  • Patent number: 6757858
Abstract: A fault detection system for a satellite communication system includes a satellite positioned above earth. Satellite has a payload that communicates with a network control center on earth. System ground stations generate diagnostic messages and transmits the diagnostic messages to the payload. Each diagnostic message has a predetermined path characteristic so that the diagnostic message takes a predetermined path through the payload, or part of the payload, if the payload is operating properly. Parts of the payload, if any, which do not permit deterministic path tracing using externally applied diagnostic messages may be probed by using internal signal or data injection points. In response to the externally applied or internally injected diagnostic message, a response signal is generated at the payload. The response signal is transmitted to the network control center where it is compared with a predetermined response.

  • Patent number: 6742184
Abstract: The present invention is described by an electronic program guide with a calendar tool, and a method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving the electronic program guide. The apparatus includes a transmission station and a plurality of receiver stations. The transmission station creates program guide data that is in an “object” format. The transmission station combines the program guide objects with digital audio and video television signals, and transmits an output stream to the plurality of receiver stations. Each of the plurality of receiver stations stores electronic program guide objects. Using data from the electronic program guide objects, the plurality of receiver stations generate a listing of television program representations, and a calendar image separate from and adjacent to the plurality of television program representations.

  • Patent number: 6509589
Abstract: A compensation circuit and method for compensating for the threshold shift in an irradiated MOSFET. The method determines the gate threshold voltage to body voltage relationship to vary the body voltage with radiation. The compensation circuit has at least one MOSFET having the same channel type as the MOSFET being compensated. The at least one matching MOSFET is connected to the gate of the MOSFET being compensated. At least one MOSFET having a channel type that is different from the channel type of the MOSFET being compensated is connected to the gate of the matching MOSFET. The result is that the compensation circuit controls a negative shift in the body voltage of the MOSFET being compensated resulting in a higher threshold voltage.

  • Patent number: 6483396
Abstract: A redundant microwave system operable to process a microwave signal propagating in a microwave cavity includes a microwave cavity and two microwave processing devices. Each microwave processing device has a transmissive impedance when it is on and a reflective impedance when it is off. There is a separate coupling probe extending from each of the microwave processing devices to locations within the microwave cavity. When a primary one of the microwave processing devices is switched on and the redundant microwave processing device is switched off, its coupling probe reflects energy so that almost all of the energy flows through the primary microwave processing device. If the primary microwave processing device fails and is switched off, its coupling probe reflects energy so that almost all energy flows through the redundant device. No separate active switching device or circuit is used.

  • Patent number: 6463282
Abstract: A satellite broadcast system and method, particularly useful for television signals, allows for local as well as nationwide broadcast service by allocating greater satellite resources to the more important local service areas. This is accomplished by broadcasting a non-uniform pattern of local service beams and designing the system to establish different service area priorities through factors such as the individual beam powers, sizes, roll-off characteristics and peak-to-edge power differentials. Frequency reuse is enhanced by permitting a certain degree of cross-beam interference, with lower levels of interference established for the more important service areas.
