  • Patent number: 6675348
Abstract: An encoder, decoder, method of encoding, and method of decoding which preserves the turbo coder performance in the waterfall region, while improving upon performance in the error asymptote region, by applying a parser or other similar element to the input bit stream. The parser assigns input bits to a subset of constituent encoders in a pseudo-random fashion. The parsing strategy breaks up input sequences producing low Hamming weight error events, thereby improving the weight spectrum and asymptotic performance of the code, while not impacting waterfall region performance. The parser or other similar element may also strengthen the weight spectrum without adversely affecting convergence of a corresponding decoder.

Abstract: A combined interference cancellation communication system employing forward error code (FEC) decoding for high spectral efficiency satellite communications. The disclosed system enables efficient utilization of available bandwidth through overlapping adjacent channels. A receiver is used to receive a waveform having data information and noise information. A filter bank is coupled with the receiver to receive and filter waveform and output channel information received by the receiver. The channel information received includes a combination of data signals and adjacent channel interference signals. Soft-input and soft-output decoders are provided to receive the channel information in order to calculate an estimated interference value. Additionally, the soft-input and soft-output interference canceler is provided for receiving the output channel information and the estimated interference value calculated from the decoders in order to provide a relatively more accurate estimated data signal.

  • Patent number: 6658661
Abstract: In a broadcast system such as a direct-to-home satellite system, program guide information for different time periods is transmitted on different carousels (e.g., one for 0-6 hours from current time, one for 6-24 hours, one for 24-72 hours, etc.) and broadcast on all transponders. Guide information for time periods in the near future is transmitted more frequently (i.e., less information per carousel) than guide information for later time periods. The receiving IRD sets a bit mask to indicate which carousel or carousels it requires and downloads them in serial or parallel. Updated information is never missed because it is given a bit pattern that is never screened by the mask. Further, the IRD can download the program guide information in the background (i.e., while displaying video) because it does not need to tune to a different transponder.

  • Patent number: 6655853
Abstract: Optical bond-wire interconnections between microelectronic chips, wherein optical wires are bonded onto microelectronic chips. Such optical connections offer numerous advantages compared to traditional electrical connections. Among other things, these interconnections are insensitive to electromagnetic interference and need not be located at the edges of a chip but rather can be placed for optimal utility to the circuit function. In addition, such interconnections can be given the same or other pre-specified lengths regardless of the placement in the module and they are capable of signal bandwidths up to 20 Gigahertz without causing a cross-talk problem. A method of fabrication of such optical interconnections using optical fiber, a laser or photodetector and etched mirror and etched V-shaped grooves.

  • Publication number: 20030213872
Abstract: A method and system for controlling a movable appendage on an aerospace vehicle independent from the position of the aerospace vehicle. First and second beacons containing actual position information for the movable appendage are tracked and acquired by first and second beacon tracking sites. • Patent number: 6650895
Abstract: A system and a methodology to improve the end-user quality of service both in terms of response time and reliability for the transport of in-call DTMF signals in wireless systems, particularly in geostationary mobile satellite systems. The methodology encompasses several techniques to provide acceptable end-to-end quality of service for DTMF. A technique is applicable for transport of DTMF in the wireless subscriber to network direction, where DTMF digits are carried in the form of an out-band message. The central part of the technique is to allow multiple key presses in the same message, thereby increasing efficiency and throughput in long-delay environment. Another technique utilizes the vocoder's functionality to carry DTMF in-band, thereby reducing system complexity.

  • Patent number: 6650869
Abstract: A system for managing return channel bandwidth in a two-way satellite communication network is disclosed. A plurality of transceivers are configured to transmit backlog information over a return channel via a satellite. The backlog information specifies an amount of queued traffic for the respective transceivers. A hub is configured to receive the backlog information and to allocate a predetermined amount of return channel bandwidth to each of the plurality of transceivers. The hub determines whether additional return channel bandwidth is available to accommodate a remaining backlog such that a bandwidth allocation amount is set to a level associated with one of the plurality of transceivers having the largest backlog. The hub selectively identifies a transceiver among the plurality of transceivers having a next largest backlog based upon the determined available return channel bandwidth.

  • Publication number: 20030208317
Abstract: A method and system for using two-way ranging navigation to accurately determine the location of a transponder platform above-Earth or a fixed or mobile target on the ground or on water. The two-way ranging navigation measurements are used as calibration references, thereby improving the positioning accuracy of GPS. The system includes GPS and a two-way ranging navigation system for taking position measurements of a target. A correction factor is determined as a function of the measurements and the GPS position is adjusted by the correction factor. The method for calibrating GPS using two-way ranging navigation involves taking a two-way ranging navigation measurement and a GPS measurement of a target, determining a correction factor as a function of the measurements, and correcting the GPS position by taking a second GPS measurement and adjusting it by the correction factor.

  • Publication number: 20030207487
Abstract: A method of making a micro electromechanical switch or tunneling sensor. A cantilevered beam structure and a mating structure are defined on a first substrate or wafer; and at least one contact structure and a mating structure are defined on a second substrate or wafer, the mating structure on the second substrate or wafer being of a complementary shape to the mating structure on the first substrate or wafer.
