  • Patent number: 5700846
Abstract: A process, and the product produced thereby, for preparing a polyurea foam which comprises reacting an aliphatic polyamine having an average functionality from about 2 to about 6 wherein about 55 to about 95 percent of the functional groups are primary amine functional groups and about 5 to about 40 percent of the functional groups are primary or secondary hydroxyl groups with a polyisocyanate in the presence of a blowing agent that comprises water. The use of polyether polyamines having primary hydroxyl groups improves the cross-linking characteristics of the polyurea foam.

  • Patent number: 5698746
Abstract: Polyether polyols having reduced terminal unsaturation are prepared in a process comprising a first step of contacting a polyether having allyl terminal unsaturation with an isomerization catalyst whereby the allyl terminal unsaturation of the polyether is reduced by at least 90% conversion to propenyl terminal unsaturation in one step and, in a final step, the resulting polyether product of the first step is contacted with an acid catalyst whereby a substantial amount of the propenyl terminal unsaturation of the polyether is removed and the corresponding polyether having an additional hydroxyl group is obtained.

  • Patent number: 5646235
Abstract: A method is provided for the preparation of tertiary polyamines by alkylating a polyamine having at least two primary amino groups without the use of excess solvent. More particularly, a tertiary amine is produced by reductively alkylating a polyamine with a carbonyl compound, such as formaldehyde, in a reaction zone while in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen under reductive conditions. The carbonyl compound is continuously supplied to the reaction zone.

  • Patent number: 5641722
Abstract: An activated porous phosphorus/vanadium oxide catalyst adapted for the catalytic oxidation of a hydrocarbon to produce a carboxylic acid anhydride. The catalyst comprises a shaped body having a volume of at least about 0.02 cc, a phosphorus content of between about 1.05 and about 1.20, a B.E.T. surface area of at least about 15 m.sup.2 /g, an average vanadium oxidation state of between about 4.06 and about 4.3, a total pore volume of at least about 0.15 cc/g, a normalized apparent shaped body density of between about 1.0 and about 2.0 g/cc, and a crush strength of at least about 4 pounds. At least about 20% of the pore volume of the catalyst is constituted of pores having a diameter between about 0.1 and about 3.3 .mu.M, and at least about 40% of the pore volume is constituted of pores having a diameter of less than about 0.1 .mu.M.

  • Patent number: 5631387
Abstract: An improved process for the preparation and recovery of maleic anhydride in which the recovery of maleic anhydride from a gaseous reaction mixture includes absorbing the maleic anhydride in a solvent and subsequently stripping maleic anhydride from the solvent to obtain crude maleic anhydride product and regenerated absorbing solvent containing polymeric tars and other contaminants. In accordance with the improvement, at least a portion of the regenerated solvent is contacted in an agitated extraction zone with an aqueous liquid extractant to hydrolyze the polymeric tars, transfer water-soluble contaminants to the aqueous extract phase and produce a mixture comprising an aqueous extract phase containing water-soluble contaminants and an organic raffinate phase comprising regenerated absorbing solvent having a reduced concentration of polymeric tars. The aqueous extract and organic raffinate phases are then separated and the organic phase is recycled and used again to absorb maleic anhydride.

  • Patent number: 5617208
Abstract: A method for detecting a source of ignition in a zone of a reactor vessel involving the optical measurement of the progress of a flame front generated by the ignition. The ignition is sensed and the time thereof measured and recorded. A photosensor senses the entry of the flame front into its view aperture and the time thereof is measured. The time of the ignition is compared to the time of the flame front's entry into the photosensor's view aperture. Further, an apparatus for determining the location of ignition of combustion in a reactor zone having a means for detecting the ignition and a plurality of photosensors for characterizing the accompanying flame front's progression. Also, a photosensor assembly for use in connection with the method and apparatus.
