Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition comprising a starch or total dietary fiber which improves the cell viability, specifically, the inventive starch and total dietary fiber isolated from the extract of Gramineae plant and the components therefrom improved the cell viability when the cells were incubated under hypoxic condition, or in the presence of beta-amyloid and 6-hydroxydopamine treatment, as well as prevented and treated myocardiac infarction, cerebral infarction and vascular dementia, or alleviated memory loss, all of which were proven using rats as the respective animal models. Therefore, they can be used as therapeutics or health care food for preventing and treating ischemic diseases or degenerative brain diseases.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition comprising extracts of Gramineae plant that improves cell viability under hypoxic conditions by inhibiting apoptosis. Thus, the extract of Triticum aestivum L., one of the Gramineae plant, of the present invention, in particular, prevents damage of brain, heart and kidney in animal models of ischemic diseases, and it also improves memory in an animal model of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, a composition comprising extracts of Gramineae can be used as therapeutic agents or health care foods for preventing and treating ischemic diseases and degenerative brain diseases.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for increasing survival rate of cells in animal cell culture under hypoxia condition by adding antibiotics to the culture media. The method of present invention comprises a step of culturing animal cells in culture media containing antibacterial agent of quinolones, quinones, aminoglycosides or chloramphenicol at the concentration range of 0.1 to 1000 &mgr;g/ml. The invented method can be practically applied for high-density animal cell culture to produce recombinant proteins or cultured cells.
