To minimize the number of bits required for a residual signal, invalid reference pixels adjacent to a current block are generated using at least one reconstructed valid reference pixel adjacent to the current block. After valid reference pixels adjacent to the current block and the generated reference pixels are filtered, the intra-prediction mode of the current block is determined. Therefore, since a reference block most approximate to the current block is generated, the amount of data needed for the residual block of the current block can be minimized.
