    Abstract: An accessory is connected between a leg bag and a urinary catheter to prevent microorganisms migrating from the leg bag up through the catheter. The accessory has a sleeve, connectors to connect the sleeve to the leg bag and to the urinary catheter, a filter positioned within the sleeve that can be coated with an antimicrobial composition, and a valve to prevent fluid from moving from the leg bag to the catheter. The antimicrobial coated sleeve can be used with or with out the filter. The filter is made by compounding a polymeric resin powder with an antimicrobial composition.

    Abstract: A process is described for the removal of mercury present at levels of 1-5000 ppb in waste water discharged from clinical research laboratories, industries and hospitals. The process involves preoxidation of the influent waste water with very small amounts of hypochlorite (16-100 ppm levels)or hydrogen peroxide, in a pretreatment tank. The waste water is then serially filtered through two pre filters and four carbon columns at a flow rate of 5 bedvolumes/hr. The preoxidation, prefiltration, organic removal, heavy metals removal (second column) and polishing stages (third and fourth) are important to achieve very low levels of mercury in the effluent. The last three columns contain activated coconut shell carbon impregnated with mercaptothiazoline . The three columns of the mercaptothiazoline impregnated carbon remove mercury and other heavy metals successively and reduce their levels in the influent to very low levels that is well below the enforced limit of 1 ppb.

    Abstract: This invention encompasses porous, nanocrystalline, biomimetic calcium phosphate coatings of the order of 2-30 microns that can be grown on metal implants. The chemical surface treatments and methods for making the calcium phosphate coatings are disclosed. Post treatment with dilute hydrogels such as phema reinforce the inorganic structure and enhance the mechanical strength of the coatings. Methods are also disclosed for adsorbing or covalently attaching growth factor proteins to derivatives of the hydrogel coated calcium phosphate coatings. Such hydrogel reinforced calcium phosphate coatings show equivalent bone tissue growth as the currently used implants and are easily resorbed. This property in combination with the immobilized growth factors is expected to enhance the process of osseointegration of the disclosed coatings.
